Graduate Student Government (GSG) News

This summer has been a summer of change for Graduate Student Government (GSG).  We have ultimately rewritten the entire constitution and restructured the organization to more fully meet your needs as graduate students.  We plan to focus GSG on three main ideals: research, travel, and networking/social events.  Through these pillars we believe we can best serve the interests of all graduate students across our campus.

GSG hopes to assist graduate students in conducting research that benefits their individual growth as advanced scholars and provides notoriety of some kind to the university community.  Further, we want to assist students in sharing the knowledge they have gained through The University of Akron and their independent research as presenters at professional conferences.  Lastly, we want to see graduate students—both within, and between departments—network together in social settings.

The most noticeable alteration to the structure of Graduate Student Government involves how meetings will be conducted.  The executive board of GSG will consist of the President, Vice President, and a college Senator for each graduate degree granting college on campus.  These individuals will handle all legislative and procedural matters, but will be aided by town hall meetings conducted monthly.  At the town hall meetings, all graduate students in attendance will be permitted to vote on issues presented by the executive board for consideration, along with voicing concerns and areas in need of attention.  At these meetings, graduate student groups and departments on campus will be able to communicate what is working and what needs fixing related to graduate student life at The University of Akron.  Further, these meetings will allow for members of the university community to come and address questions previously posed and present information to graduate students on issues of concern.

Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.  In the first week of Fall semester, we will be emailing all graduate students looking for candidates to run for college senators on our executive board.  We are also actively seeking a treasurer for the organization.  I can be reached at wmiller824@gmail.com or 330.881.1893.  Feel free to drop me a note of any kind.

Good luck with the beginning of the semester!
