ACS Petroleum Research Fund

Main Purpose: To fund new directions of research regarding petroleum or fossil fuels.

Benefits: Research Grant, no amount specified

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Research must be directly related to petroleum or fossil fuels at nonprofit institutions (usually colleges and universities)
  • Researcher should not have published or received financial support from another funding agency for current proposed research
  • Research must be a “new direction” rather than an extension of the researcher’s previous research

Biomedical Engineering Innovation and Career Development Travel Awards

Main Purpose: To provide travel funding for graduate, postdoctoral fellows, and early career faculty from underrepresented populations in engineering who are conducting research regarding health disparities and minority health.

Benefits:

  • $800 travel stipend
  • Complementary registration to the BMES 2015 Annual Meeting

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a graduate student,  postdoctoral fellow, or early career faculty member
  • Must identify with an underrepresented population in engineering, including women and racial and ethnic minorities
  • Preference given to those who are conducting research on health disparities
  • Must be a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES)
  • May not be receiving any other funding from BMES

American Indian Graduate Center Fellowship

Main Purpose: To support American Indian and Alaskan Native graduate students.

Benefits: $1,000-$5,000 per academic year

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Pursuing a graduate degree at an institution in The United States
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Enrolled member of a federally recognized American Indian or Alaskan Native group or able to provide documentation of descent (one-fourth degree verifiable federally recognized Indian blood) by submitting a Tribal Eligibility Certificate

Science of Science and Innovation Policy Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (SciSIPDDRIG)

Main Purpose: To help fund research that will “develop, improve, and expand models, analytical tools, data, and metrics that can be applied to the science policy decision making process. Proposals may also develop methodologies to analyze science and technology data, and to convey the information to a variety of audiences.”

Research topics that may be supported include:

  • “Examination of the way contexts, structures, and processes of science and engineering research are affected by policy decision
  • Evaluation of the tangible and intangible returns from investments in science and from investments in research and development
  • Study of structures and processes that facilitate the development of usable knowledge, theories of creative processes and their transformation into social and economic outcomes
  • Collection, analysis and visualization of new data describing the scientific and engineering enterprise”

Benefits: 

  • 1-3 grants are available with total funding equaling $60,000
  • Total direct costs may not exceed $20,000

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Doctoral Student enrolled in a U.S. University
  • Principal Investigator must be advisor of the doctoral student or a faculty member at the U.S. university where the doctoral student is enrolled. The doctoral student will be the Co-PI.

Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants

Main Purpose:  To support research that will “produce outcomes that address pertinent problems and issues at the interface of science, technology, and society, such as those having to do with practices and assumptions, ethics, values, governance, and policy.”

Benefits: 

  • Maximum $15,000- $18,000 dissertation improvement grant
  • Can be used for conducting field research, data collection and sample survey costs, payments to subjects, research equipment, travel, and partial living expenses if conducting research away from home university.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • For proposals, the dissertation advisor is the principal investigator and doctoral student is the co-principal investigator
  • Research must relate to science and technology

Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (AGS-PRF)

Main Purpose: To support beginning researchers within 3 years of completing their PhD in carrying out independent research projects in the areas of atmospheric and geospace sciences.

Benefits:

  • Stipend of $58,000 per year paid monthly at the rate of $4,833 directly to the Fellow
  • An annual lump sum fellowship allowance of $28,000 to support research and publication activities
  • Fellowship may be taken to the institution or facility of choice

Time Limit: up to 2 years

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Current graduate student OR have held a PhD for no more than 3 years
  • Degree in the field of science or engineering with research plans falling in the areas of atmospheric and geospace sciences
  • U.S. citizen or legally admitted permanent resident
  • Proposal must be submitted by an individual, not the institution
  • Individual must identify a host institution or sponsoring scientist
  • May not concurrently submit the same research project to another NSF program
