A Celebration of Law Alumnus to Benefit Law Scholarship

A Community Appreciation Luncheon for the Honorable Judge James R. Williams, retired, will be held Saturday, July 28, at 11:30 a.m. in the Jean Hower Taber Student Union, Ballrooms A and B. Proceeds from the event will be donated to The Honorable James R. and Catherine D. Williams Scholarship Fund administered by our School of Law, which has a table at the luncheon.

The event is being presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Homes, Inc., which is operated by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The Eta Tau Lambda Chapter of the fraternity was established at UA in 1960.

Williams, who earned a B.A.Ed. in 1960 and a J.D. in 1965 at UA, has had a distinguished legal career, both as an attorney and on the bench. He was the first African American judge on the Summit County Common Pleas Court, where he served from 1989 until 2003.

The UA alumnus has been a civil rights leader, active in civic organizations and he also served as national president of Alpha Phi Alpha. He worked to provide housing for moderate and low-income families and senior citizens, serving as the first chairman of Alpha Phi Alpha Homes. He has been honored as one of the “100 Most Influential Black Americans” by Ebony Magazine.

Please order your tickets now — $50 each or $400 per table — online at the Eta Tau Lambda Chapter website or through direct purchase at Alpha Homes. Contact Alex DeJarnett at alexdejarnett@aol.com to make your meal selection.

A.L.I.C.E. Training

Please plan to attend one of two A.L.I.C.E. (active shooter) training sessions scheduled in September.  The sessions are scheduled on Tuesday, September 19th at 12:00-1:00 pm and Friday, September 29th at 11:00 am – 12:00 pm in Room 160.  We certainly hope that we never need to use any of this training at the law school, but it is valuable information to know where ever you are. Please consider attending one of these sessions.
