Deadline for UA Student Trustee Position extended!

The deadline to apply for the Student Trustee position on the University’s Board of Trustees has been extended.
Student Trustees are involved with decisions that will shape the future of the University and its students. It is also a great way to make connections and gain valuable leadership skills.
As the University’s governing body, the Board selects and appoints the president, sets the operating budget, approves personnel appointments, grants all degrees awarded by the University, establishes tuition and fee rates, approves contracts, and approves all degrees, rules, regulations, curriculum changes and new programs.
Applications are available online (Word document) and outside the Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate Student Government Office located in Student Union 307A.
Completed applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, April 15, and can be turned into the Board office located in Student Union Room 337.
Questions? please contact USG President Taylor Swift at usgPresident@uakron.edu.
This message is from Undergraduate Student Government, Graduate Student Government, the Student Bar Association and the current Student Trustees.

Don’t Forget! Graduating Class Composite Photo Opportunity – This Wednesday

ATTN: December Graduates and May Graduation Candidates

With changes here at the law school, we have had difficulty with scheduling the class composite photo sittings for graduating students. Please SAVE THE DATE for April 6th, from 2pm to 6pm on the third floor of the law school near the office of Student Services for the last-chance photo sittings. Just stop by – no appointments necessary. It takes approximately 5 minutes per student.

There is no cost for participating in this class composite and I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. You will be required to choose one proof for the Class Composite. I will provide you with a digital copy of all the proofs and instructions will be given to notify me of your chosen proof number for the composite photo. A full-size digital file of the proof you choose will be yours to keep. If you wish to order a copy of the Class Composite, you may bring a check made payable to The University of Akron in the amount of $30 at the time of your sitting, or you may order a copy of the Class Composite at a later date through the Student Services Office.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • It is required that you wear a dark (Navy, Black, Dark Grey, Dark Brown) suit for a professional appearance and a coordinated look for your Class Composite Photo.

Search Dockets and Find Briefs Using Bloomberg Law

Bloomberg Law allows you to:

  • Search the federal dockets that are on PACER plus many state court dockets at once.
  • Search dockets by keywords, and even search the full text of the court filings, where the filings are available. PACER just searches for party name, case number and nature of suit.  State court dockets usually just search for party name and case number.
  • Access federal court documents without paying PACER’s 10 cents a page fee (although PACER allows $15/month free, and opinions are free).  This free access is granted to law students, faculty and staff.
  • Access many briefs and other filings that are not on Lexis or Westlaw

See this short video, How do I use Dockets on Bloomberg Law?

A forthcoming article notes that many written opinions are available via court dockets which are not on Lexis or Westlaw. See Elizabeth McCuskey, Submerged Precedent, 16 Nevada Law Journal ___ 2016 (forthcoming)[SSRN].   Professor McCuskey states, “[s]ubmerged precedent thus raises the specter that docket-based research may be necessary in some areas to ascertain an accurate picture of the law itself, not just trial courts’ administration of it.”

AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION VISIT NEXT WEEK!

ALL STUDENTS PLEASE ATTEND A RECEPTION WITH THE ABA

Snacks will be served!

Monday, April 4 at 5:00pm, Quaker Plaza A.

Dean Wilson and Dean Thomas invite all students to an open meeting with the visiting American Bar Associate team on Monday, April 4th at 5pm in Quaker Plaza A.

Every seven years, the American Bar Association (ABA) reaccredits the law school.  The reaccreditation process involves a visit to the school by a team of professors and experts from across the nation.  They visit the school for three days, observing classes and meeting with all constituencies including faculty, staff, and most importantly, students.  They want to hear from you about what you love about Akron Law, so please attend.
