Ground is broken (cermoniously) at stadium site

As you can see here, work is well under way for InfoCision Stadium/Summa Field. Clearly, ground has been broken.

So on Friday, April 4, UA held a ceremonial groundbreaking to remind campus and the community about the benefits of the project and to thank publicly the lead donors who are supporting it.

Breaking ground for InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field are, from left, J.D. Brookhart, head football coach; Karen and Gary Taylor of InfoCison Management Corp.; Mack Rhoades, director of athletics; Dr. William F. Demas, chair of UA’s Board of Trustees; Dr. Luis Proenza, University president; Don Plusquellic, mayor of the City of Akron; Tom Strauss, president and chief executive officer, Summa Health System; and Ted Curtis, UA vice president for capital planning and facilities management.

In his remarks, UA President Dr. Luis Proenza said:

“I am glad that you are with us, on this historic day, as we take the next step in redefining and reshaping our campus and community, by breaking ground for a facility that will mean so very much for this University and this city and the many people we serve.

“Our students will have one more reason to stay on campus and become more engaged in university life, which we know from research, leads to greater student satisfaction and success.

“Our student-athletes will have another premiere facility to demonstrate their talent, sportsmanship and teamwork.

”Our faculty will have a yet another outstanding building in which to advance our academic mission, as this complex will be complete with classrooms and space for our Sport Sciences and Wellness Education program.

“Alumni will have another reason to return to campus, again don the blue and gold, and renew friendships from years past.

“Our many fans will enjoy an enriched a game-day experience with significant enhancements in terms of sightlines, comfort, parking, pregame events — I’ve been told even the popcorn will taste better.

“For University Park, the complex will be stand as a symbol of our commitment to working alongside Summa and other community partners to revitalize our neighborhood.

“For our University and our city, the gleaming glass and brick structure that will stand here – InfoCision Stadium/Summa Field – will represent yet another bold step in our renaissance, and another sign that Akron today is a vibrant, thriving city in a region that has so much to offer its residents…”
