Hello everyone, Warm weather is temptingly here to stay with the  glorious 60-degree temps today!  With cold weather subsiding, people are venturing outdoors for hobbies, exercise, and yardwork.  Students and community members use the 3D Lab makerspace regardless of the weather for making things; the electronic machines seem to work best inside without rain or snow falling on them. Lately, we’ve been spending a lot of time with the CNC milling machine funded by the Wayne County Community Foundation.  It carves signage as well as three dimensional shapes out of wood and other hard materials.  I’ll explain more about this amazing machine later in thisRead More →

Hello everyone, We’ve certainly received our share of snow recently!  The winter break gave 3D Lab staff time to clean up the lab, fix and improve equipment, even have time to explore new things to make!  Lab staff Carter make good use of the time, learning how to operate the Roland MDX-40A, a CNC router capable of carving into cylindrical stock as well as flat material.  The lab is restocked, the machines are humming along, what better time to get your projects made in the 3D Lab! Speaking of snow, engineering students dream-up interesting machines to handle the white stuff.  Students below built this cute,Read More →

Hello everyone, With the pleasant (and somewhat alarming) snowfall a couple of weeks ago, it feels more like the holidays than ever!  The fall semester finished up; engineering students risked robotic life-and-limb with the annual Battle Bots Tournament while others completed homework and chilled in the tranquil 3D Lab environment.  Having finished their final round of exams, our students look forward to a month of taking it easy and being with loved ones. The 3D Lab is open weekdays through Wednesday, December 22nd from 8:00-4:00 p.m.  After that, the 3D Lab is closed for the holidays until Monday, January 3rd.  If you have projects thatRead More →

Hello everyone, Finals Week is here!  Students are cramming for their final tests this week, racing to finish end-of-term projects, etc.  The 3D Lab is packed with engineering students, especially when projects were due that week.  It’s refreshing to see this activity after a long, dry spell earlier in the pandemic.  Students are having a lot of fun in the lab, too.  Check out these cute dioramas made by Early Education majors! Earlier in the year, community member Norm was asked by a local sewing machine repair person if he would like a challenge to make a gear for a sewing machine that was noRead More →
