Internship Summary:
The summer intern will obtain first-hand knowledge in the design and conduct of residue studies with a particular focus on the assay of drug and metabolites from biological matrices. Specifically, the analysis of small molecule drugs in edible tissues collected from livestock species will be the focus of the internship. The intern will be trained to conduct specific chemical assays using modern chromatography / mass spectrometry techniques and equipment. The intern will be part of the Metabolism and Safety Department and will be primarily assigned within the Human Food Safety team although interactions with other teams are likely to occur.
Internship Job Duties:
- Assist laboratory personnel with preparation of laboratory reagents.
- Assist laboratory personnel with assay method development related to the quantitation of small molecules in biological matrices.
- Assist laboratory personnel with the conduct of residue studies with a particular focus on the assay of drug and metabolites from biological matrices.
- Assist in data reduction / analysis and in the preparation of final report tables for specific studies.
Internship Qualifications:
- BS, MS or PhD Student in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related area
- Experience in a chemistry laboratory including instrumental analysis
- Familiarity with chromatographic separations (HPLC), in vitro test systems, and mass spectrometry is desired
- Enrolled in a degree program during the Spring term preceding internship
- Completion of at least one year of undergraduate studies and a 3.0 GPA or higher
- At least 18 years of age and authorized to work in the U.S.
- Successfully pass a background check and drug screen
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving & analytical skills
