The Boika group has a wide range of research interests in the fields of analytical chemistry, energy applications and, most recently, machine learning \/ artificial intelligence. In particular, we are passionate about developing and applying techniques of single-entity electrochemistry to analysis of pathogens (bacteria), single-cell organisms (amoebas) and emerging contaminants such as microplastics. By employing the techniques of ML\/AI, we are hoping to develop a new approach to electrochemical sensing that would allow highly sensitive and selective detection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the past, we have collaborated on an NSF-funded project aiming at developing novel ferrocene-based catholytes for redox-flow battery applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are also interested in the fundamental studies of electron transfer rates in non-polar organic solvents and ionic liquids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most recently we have become very excited about developing novel curricula incorporating AI\/ML fundamentals into the programs of analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, and general chemistry. In Fall 2025, Dr. Boika taught a new course, CHEM 410\/510: Fundamentals and Applications of Machine
