{"id":18694,"date":"2014-02-18T16:04:49","date_gmt":"2014-02-18T21:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/?p=18694"},"modified":"2014-02-18T16:05:36","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T21:05:36","slug":"peace-of-mind-uncollectible-clinic-tuesday-february-25-2014-volunteers-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/2014\/02\/18\/peace-of-mind-uncollectible-clinic-tuesday-february-25-2014-volunteers-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace of Mind Uncollectible Clinic &#8211; Tuesday, February 25, 2014 &#8211; volunteers needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an attorney you need to know you can collect on your client\u2019s behalf.\u00a0 The \u201cPeace of Mind\u201d uncollectible clinic will teach you how to review credit reports and financial statements and will provide hands-on experience working directly with clients.<\/p>\n<p>This bankruptcy by-pass clinic is designed to assist clients whose income and assets are of a type that is exempt from garnishment or attachment through legal process.\u00a0 Students will attend a training session on the day of the clinic.\u00a0 Student volunteers will work individually with each client to review and verify their financial situation.\u00a0 Afterwards, clients and their assigned law student will participate in an educational presentation on Ohio\u2019s exemption statute, O.R.C. 2329.66.\u00a0 The client and student will then meet individually with an attorney who will review the client\u2019s documents, verify that the client is \u201cexempt from collection upon judgment,\u201d and confirm that creditors have been correctly identified.\u00a0 In order to determine the effectiveness of the \u201cNotice of Uncollectibility\u201d letters and identify potential violations of the Fair Debt Act (U.S.C. 15 \u00a71692), students will be required to make follow up contact twice with each assigned client.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic and follow up work will meet students\u2019 5-hour pro bono requirement.
