{"id":19810,"date":"2014-04-09T20:40:26","date_gmt":"2014-04-10T00:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/?p=19810"},"modified":"2014-04-09T20:40:26","modified_gmt":"2014-04-10T00:40:26","slug":"pro-bono-opportunities-on-long-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/2014\/04\/09\/pro-bono-opportunities-on-long-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro Bono Opportunities on Long Island!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Sandy Legal Assistance Work<br \/>\nHurricane Sandy struck Long Island in October 2012 devastating the lives of thousands of residents.<br \/>\nThanks to a generous grant by the Rausch Foundation, Touro Law Center was able to set up TLC-HEART<br \/>\n(Hurricane Emergency Assistance and Referral Team) which enabled the school to provide assistance in<br \/>\nthe immediate aftermath of the storm. At that time pro-bono opportunities involved direct client contacts,<br \/>\nperforming intakes, and advising on where to obtain immediate survival assistance relating to food and shelter.<br \/>\nNow the work has evolved to researching and preparing for litigating cases in federal court on flood insurance<br \/>\nclaims and researching and preparing policy recommendations to advocate for better disaster management<br \/>\npolicy and procedures in case of future natural or man-made disasters. Touro Law Center\u2019s continued work<br \/>\nin the area of disaster related legal assistance is now made possible by a grant from Montana Legal Services<br \/>\nAssociation which sponsors a Volunteer Sandy Assistance at Touro Law Center for a period of one year.<br \/>\nSome slots are available working in Touro Law Center\u2019s Disaster Law Clinic. These placements are<br \/>\nlimited and highly selective. A few other slots may be available with other Suffolk and Nassau Counties legal<br \/>\nservices providers. Long Island is very geographically dispersed and public transportation is limited. A car is<br \/>\nthe most common transportation on Long Island Most of last summer\u2019s participants were local students who<br \/>\nwere returning home for the summer. However, participation is open to all students. Touro Law Center has<br \/>\narranged for discounted lodging at the Marriott Residence Inn located \u00bd a mile from the school. Central Islip is<br \/>\nserved by the Ronkonkoma line of the Long Island Railroad which departs from Pennsylvania Station in NYC.<br \/>\nInterested students may contact Patricia Sturm, Esq.
