On March 9\u00a0from 7-9pm, Social Justice and Women\u2019s Rights Advocate Sandra Fluke will be speaking in Ballroom A in the University of Akron Student Union, with the topic of \u201cMaking our Voices Heard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sandra\u00a0Fluke is a Georgetown Law graduate and a well-known attorney who is famous for, in February of 2012, being denied the right to testify before Congress by Congressional Republicans on the need for women\u2019s own private insurance to cover contraception, with Congress instead choosing to listen to panel of all men about the matter. Later that month she was granted permission to testify before the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, and went on to be a featured speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. She is also known as one of the co-founders of the New York Statewide Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which successfully lobbied legislation allowing LGBTQ, teen, and other victims of intimate partner violence to access civil orders of protection. \u00a0Her work has been honored by the American Federation of Teachers, American Constitution Society, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, National Partnership for Women and Families, NOW, Women\u2019s Campaign Fund, and many more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
