{"id":57915,"date":"2018-05-23T14:53:11","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T18:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/?p=57915"},"modified":"2018-05-23T14:53:45","modified_gmt":"2018-05-23T18:53:45","slug":"57915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/2018\/05\/23\/57915\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 NYSBA Writing Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE\u00a0<\/strong><strong>2018 NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION\u00a0<\/strong><strong>COMMITTEE ON ANIMALS AND THE LAW\u00a0<\/strong><strong>STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Committee on Animals and the Law of the New York State Bar Association is very pleased to announce the Ninth Annual Student Writing Competition.\u00a0 The deadline for submission is July 12, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee on Animals and the Law was established to provide information resources for the New York State Bar Association\u2019s members and the public about non-human, animal\u2011related humane issues, which arise from and have an effect upon our legal system.\u00a0 This competition seeks to foster legal scholarship among law students in the area of animals and the law.\u00a0 This competition provides law students with an incentive and opportunity to learn more about this area of law.<\/p>\n<p>Law students (which include J.D., L.L.M., Ph.D., and S.J.D. candidates) are invited to submit to the Committee on Animals and the Law an article concerning any area of Animal Law.\u00a0 All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of attorneys and other professionals practicing or otherwise involved in animal law.\u00a0 The winners will be chosen in accordance with the competition rules.\u00a0 The first place winner will receive $1,000 and a certificate of achievement.\u00a0 The second place winner will receive $500 and a certificate of achievement.\u00a0 The third place winner will receive a certificate of achievement.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>RULES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Topic:<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Any topic on Animal Law.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Eligibility:<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>To be eligible for consideration, the submission must be written by a student currently enrolled (full time or part time) in an ABA-accredited law school.\u00a0 Students expecting to receive their degree in 2018 are eligible for consideration.\u00a0 The submission must be written by one and only one student, i.e., papers jointly written by more than one student or that have been subjected to line editing by professors or advisors shall not be considered.\u00a0 No paper that has been previously published in any form shall be considered. \u00a0We will only accept one submission per entrant.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Deadline:<\/u><\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Papers must be emailed no later than July 12<strong>,<\/strong> 2018<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Criteria:<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Written submissions will be judged based on quality, clarity, originality, and organization.\u00a0 All essays must also meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p>Length:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Type written, double spaced, no less than 12 point Times New Roman font, on 8 \u00bd inch by 11 inch paper, with 1 inch margins, and\u00a0no more than 25 pages, including footnotes.\u00a0 Footnotes should be single spaced, and no less than 10 point font.<\/p>\n<p>Format:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Email to Kimberly Francis, NYSBA Staff Liaison no later than July 12, 2018, at <a href=\"mailto:kfrancis@nysba.org\">kfrancis@nysba.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Cover Page:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Entrants must submit a cover page indicating the entrant\u2019s name, law school, expected year of graduation, mailing address, email address, and telephone number.\u00a0 All other references to identifying information, such as name, law school, and contact information should be deleted or redacted from the body of the submission.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Prizes Awarded:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1st place: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 $1,000 and a certificate of achievement<\/p>\n<p>2nd place:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 $500 and a certificate of achievement<\/p>\n<p>3<sup>rd<\/sup> place:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Certificate of recognition<\/p>\n<p>The Committee also reserves the right to offer the winners (and other entrants), in\u00a0the Committee\u2019s discretion, the opportunity to publish his\/her paper in the Committee\u2019s <u>Laws\u00a0&amp;
