Traditionally, 23 fellows are chosen for\nthe program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Program Objectives: <\/strong>Encourage\noutstanding college graduates to pursue careers in public service; Provide\npractical experience in the legislative process and legislative research;\nDevelop a group of trained personnel from which persons may be recruited for\npermanent staff positions; Provide staff assistance to Ohio&#8217;s elected officials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Duties: <\/strong>LSC fellows\nengage in numerous activities and are given a variety of responsibilities.\nSpecific duties depend on a fellow&#8217;s assignment; however, most fellows perform\nsome common duties. Fellows&#8217; duties usually include writing assignments such as\npress releases, newsletters, speeches, and committee memorandums. You may also\nbe asked to research public policy issues or legislation, and attend committee\nand other meetings. Occasionally, a fellow may be asked to travel to a member&#8217;s\ndistrict for events and\/or meetings Fellows also assist with various office and\nadministrative duties These may include but are not limited to, database\nmaintenance, scheduling, filing, and office correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Qualifications:&nbsp;<\/strong>You must have\ncompleted at least a BA\/BS by December 2019. Must have a strong academic record\nand excellent written and oral communication skills. Ohio residents and\nnonresidents may apply. Prior political involvement or participation in a\npolitical party is not required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benefits: <\/strong>LSC fellows are\npaid $31,200 annually with an opportunity to earn an additional bonus of up to\n$2,000 upon completion of the program.&nbsp;Fellows receive sick leave,\npersonal leave, vacation leave, and paid holidays, and at the discretion of\nLSC, may receive compensatory time off for overtime worked. Fellows are\nimmediately eligible to participate in the health care plan offered by the\nstate and, after one year of continuous state service, are eligible for dental\nand vision coverage. All fellows must participate in the Ohio Public Employees\nRetirement System. Deductions made on behalf of the retirement system are\nrefundable, according to current federal law and state regulations, upon\ntermination of state employment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hours: <\/strong>The required\nwork hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 &#8211; 5:00. Depending on the activity of\nthe General Assembly, you may be asked to work late hours or to come in\nearly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Informational Tours: <\/strong>LSC offers\ninformational tours on most Mondays and Fridays through March. These brief\nsessions provide detailed information about the program, which may assist\nindividuals in deciding whether or not to apply for a fellowship\nposition.&nbsp;The tours also provide an opportunity for prospective applicants\nto meet program staff and current fellows, and to see the Vern Riffe Center and\nthe Statehouse. To sign up for a tour, contact program assistant Stefanie\nThurman at (614) 644-1326.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Apply:&nbsp; (1) <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsc.ohio.gov\/documents\/general\/fellowship\/2020_Application-Legislative.pdf\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>(2) resume, (3)\nunofficial transcript from EACH college and university attended (for more than\none quarter or semester), (4) two SEALED letters of recommendation from persons\nfamiliar with your academic work, employment experience, extracurricular\nactivities, and\/or community activities. Letters of recommendation should not\nbe requested from an elected public official unless you were employed by the\npublic official and the official can comment specifically on your performance\nand work habits; (5) a two-four-page typewritten personal statement. The\nrequirement will be used to evaluate your writing skills and to help the\nselection committee learn more about you. You must MAIL your application packet.
