Spring 2020 Internship Positions<\/strong>
The United States Department of Justice has an opening for one legal intern at the Detroit Immigration Court for Spring 2020. Prior knowledge of immigration law is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. Strong research and writing skills are required. Applicants must be United States citizens and must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week during the semester.

Issues commonly before the Court include asylum eligibility, cancellation of removal, motions to reopen, and adjustment of status. The types of projects assigned to legal interns vary depending on the Court\u2019s docket, and may entail:

\uf0b7 Drafting decisions on applications for relief from removal
\uf0b7 Research and preparation of memoranda on complex legal issues
\uf0b7 Drafting decisions on motions pending before the Court

This internship offers students an excellent opportunity to develop research, writing, and analytical skills. Legal interns will work under the supervision of the Court\u2019s Attorney Advisors, but will also interact with individual Immigration Judges.

This internship is an unpaid volunteer position. Students interested in receiving stipends or academic credit from their law school should contact the appropriate person at their law school to determine their eligibility.
Applications must be received no later than 11:59 P.M. on Sunday, October 20, 2019. Applications should include the following materials:

\uf0b7 Cover letter;
\uf0b7 R\u00e9sum\u00e9;
\uf0b7 Official or unofficial law school transcript;
\uf0b7 Writing sample of five to ten pages (not substantially edited by others); and
\uf0b7 A list of three references (minimum of one academic reference preferred).

Successful completion of an FBI background check is required before interns can begin work.
