{"id":78343,"date":"2020-05-20T07:32:27","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T11:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/?p=78343"},"modified":"2020-05-12T11:32:42","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T15:32:42","slug":"akron-law-summer-experience-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/law\/2020\/05\/20\/akron-law-summer-experience-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Akron Law Summer Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Akron Law\nSummer Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Akron Law\nSummer Experience is 5 weeks of hands-on, practical legal training offered to\nrising 2Ls and 3Ls to provide students with a meaningful summer experience,\ndespite COVID-19 disrupting many internships and clerkships. The flexible and\nremote nature of the program allows for <em>all <\/em>students to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning June\n1<sup>st<\/sup>, students may participate in any or all of the planned programs,\nand those students who participate in all 5 programs will receive a Certificate\nof Completion. The Akron Law Summer Experience will allow students to continue\nto develop substantive legal skills, to add meaningful experience to their\nresumes, to produce a writing sample for future job applications, and to\nfurther develop as a professional. The program would make an excellent\ncomplement to your summer internship, externship, clinics, or coursework, or\nmay be a stand-alone summer experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Akron Law\nSummer Experience will be facilitated by Career Services and delivered on\nSymplicity\u2019s Pathways portal. All programming and work will be done virtually.\nCareer Services has partnered with Lexis Nexis, the Akron Bar Association, the\nLegal Writing Program, and the Legal Clinics. Together, we hope to deliver a\nsuccessful and meaningful summer experience! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedule\nof Programs and Events<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Week 1<\/strong>:\nLaw Firm Legal Research Training:&nbsp; Jennifer Durkin of Lexis will offer a\ncustomized training for Akron Law students, including a simulated summer\nassociate research assignment, and training covering researching cases,\nstatutes, regulations, and secondary sources. Any students wishing to pursue\nLexis Certification will have the opportunity to schedule additional trainings.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Week 2<\/strong>:\nLegal Writing Exercise: Students will design a 1000-word electronic \u201cclient\nalert\u201d about a current legal issue. &nbsp;A\nclient alert is a short news bulletin that informs clients of a significant\nlegal development that will affect their business \u2014 typically a new law,\nregulation, policy or major case. The purpose of a client alert is to explain\nhow a legal development will affect clients and what steps they should take as\na result of that development. The alert should provide practical information,\nnot a legal analysis. Each student will receive feedback and learn best\npractices for preparing client alerts from volunteer attorneys from the Akron\nBar Association. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Week 3\n(Friday, June 19<sup>th<\/sup> at 12:15PM)<\/strong>: Understanding the Business of\nLaw: A panel of attorneys will discuss billable hours, client confidentiality,\nengagement letters, client development, building a book of business, and use of\ntechnology by attorneys, and answer questions about the business operations of\nlaw firms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Week 4<\/strong>:\nClient Intake Exercise: Under the supervision of Professor Joann Sahl, each\nstudent will conduct a client interview through a virtual Re-entry clinic or a\nhousing case referred by Community Legal Aid. Students will spend time\ninterviewing the assigned client, gathering facts of the case, and drafting a\nbrief memorandum summarizing the client matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Week 5\n(Thursday, July 2<sup>nd<\/sup> at 5:30PM)<\/strong>: Virtual Networking Event:\nCo-hosted by the Akron Bar Association, students will be invited to a virtual\nnetworking event.
