AECRES is an acronym for Advocating for Every Child\u2019s Right to Educational Success. Our\u00a0mission is to ensure all children in West Michigan receive the quality education they need to thrive. You can learn more by visiting our website at www.miaecres.org.<br><strong>Position Overview<\/strong><br>\u2022 Law students seeking practical hands-on experience with opportunity for client contact would benefit from an internship or externship with our program. We concentrate our practice around helping students and families understand, exercise, and protect their education\u00a0rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the\u00a0Rehabilitation Act, and related federal and state education and civil rights laws.<br>\u2022 Students ranging from rising 1Ls through 3Ls have participated in our work through\u00a0the supervising attorney\u2019s private practice and found it extremely rewarding.<br>\u2022 We ask for a consistent part-time commitment of at least 8 \u2013 10 hours a week for\u00a0the course of the experience.<br>\u2022 Opportunities are available for winter, spring, summer, and fall. Work is 100%<br>remote at this time due to both COVID-19 and the geographic scope of the services provided,\u00a0but in-person work opportunities may be available in Kalamazoo, MI in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Responsibilities<\/strong><br>\u2022 Legal research of special education and student disciplinary issues<br>\u2022 Becoming familiar with education and civil rights statutes, administrative rules,<br>and case law, including but not limited to, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA),\u00a0Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),\u00a0Michigan Administrative Rules of Special Education (MARSE), Endrew F. v. Douglas County School\u00a0District, 580 U.S. , 137 S. Ct. 988 (2017) (Endrew F.), and Goss v. Lopez, 419 U.S. 565 (1975).<br>\u2022 Drafting school communications on behalf of or in conjunction with parents.<br>\u2022 Reviewing student records and identifying potential legal violations.<br>\u2022 Reviewing draft IEP\u2019s with parents and identifying areas of concern to be addressed\u00a0at IEP meetings (or 504 plans\/meetings).<br>\u2022 Attending Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan meetings on behalf of student.\u00a0<br>\u2022 Weekly client consultations to review and monitor IEP\/504 Plan implementation and\u00a0address immediate client concerns.<br>\u2022 Attending Manifestation Determination Review Hearings on behalf of student.<br>\u2022 Representing students at expulsion hearings, including but not limited to,<br>reviewing documents, drafting and presenting opening and closing statements, presenting discovery,\u00a0and questioning witnesses.<br>\u2022 Drafting state complaints on behalf of student.<br>\u2022 Drafting due process complaints on behalf of students.<br>\u2022 Assisting supervising attorney with preparing for Due Process Hearings.<br>\u2022 Other assignments as directed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Knowledge, Abilities and Skills<\/strong><br>\u2022 Excellent legal, organizational, written and oral communication skills<br>\u2022 Ability to relate comfortably to individuals of different racial\/ethnic, economic and cultural backgrounds<br>\u2022 Ability to multi-task and complete projects in a timely matter under pressure<br>\u2022 Knowledge of communities to be served<br>\u2022 Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and social justice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Qualifications<\/strong><br>\u2022 Rising 1L-3L<br>\u2022 Strong research and writing skills<br>\u2022 Outstanding time management and organization skills<br>\u2022 Effective mediation and negotiation skills<br>\u2022 Interest in education or civil rights law<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Salary<\/strong><br>Internships are volunteer positions.
