This may involve the preparation of draft opinions, bench memos and memos discussing discretionary appeals and complaints for writs, speeches, or individualized research projects. The extern will be assigned to a judicial attorney and will have his\/her work reviewed by that attorney. Externs will also be able to observe oral arguments on the merits of cases when the Court is in session.

Children & Families Services Domestic Violence Program

The position is anticipated to be 10-15 hours per week. The Domestic Violence Program provides technical assistance, training, and policy recommendations to improve court performance in cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking. The Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence makes policy recommendations to the Supreme Court of Ohio through the section. Current projects include developing guidance materials surrounding risk assessment, strangulation, victims\u2019 rights, firearm issues, and domestic violence for courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extern will perform legal research and writing on domestic violence related law and assistance with editing materials created on the above topics. The ideal extern is a 2L or 3L and has interest in family or domestic violence law, but not required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attorney Services Division

The position is anticipated to be for 12-16 hours per week, but this is flexible. The Office of Attorney Services coordinates the work of the Attorney Services Division and provides staff assistance and oversight to several areas of the court. The extern will support projects related to the Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program, which pairs new lawyers with experienced mentors as a way to satisfy mandatory New Lawyer Training. Projects include, but are not limited to: ensuring that curriculum-related mentoring worksheets are up to date, assisting the Commission on Professionalism in meeting preparation and follow up, other Commission projects as assigned, mostly in the form of publications and live events. The extern would also assist with Office-related tasks and duties<\/p>\n\n\n\n

related to the Board on the Unauthorized Practice of Law. The ideal extern is a 2L with excellent attention to detail, outstanding organizational ability, strong interpersonal communication skills, and expertise in Word and Adobe software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
