{"id":775,"date":"2020-04-23T01:33:14","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T01:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/?page_id=775"},"modified":"2020-05-07T12:39:43","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T12:39:43","slug":"social-distancing-model","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/social-distancing-model\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Distancing Model"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>To take a true look at the effect of social distancing, we did SIR models that calculated the spreading of COVID-19 both with and without distancing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Social Distancing <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/\">Model<\/a> applies the concept of social distancing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/sir-model\/\">SIR model<\/a>. Social distancing is the practice of keeping physical distance from one another to prevent the spread of highly contagious outbreaks, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/glossary\/\">COVID-19<\/a>.  Essentially, variables are added to the SIR model to represent the distancing, or lack of, in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/glossary\/\">populations<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/mbmid\/glossary\/\">Rates<\/a> are assigned to values based on how much distancing is done. The higher the value, the better or more effective distancing is being practiced. The only difference between the regular SIR Model and the &#8220;Non-Distancing&#8221; Model is that the &#8220;Non-Distancing&#8221; formula makes sure to specify that populations are non-distancing because this is what the model is examining. If the model was not about social distancing, then the formula could have been written as a regular SIR MModel, but it helps to have variables that specifically represent non-distancing populations when that idea is so critical to preventing the spread of COVID-19.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>First, take a look at the &#8220;Non-Distancing&#8221; model to look at how the susceptible, infected, and recovered populations change in relation to the spread of COVID-19 when social distancing is not practices and when populations continue life as normal. Each group has a population of 50 people. The blue line represents a population where they did not practice social distancing and the red line represents a population practicing highly effective social distancing. The number cases of those who did not social distance is near equal to the 50 people that exist in the population. The population that practiced social distancing saw a very small amount of infections comparatively.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When these models were turned into graphs, the \u201cNot Social Distancing\u201d graph had a high curve compared to the curve of the \u201cSocial Distancing\u201d graph. The graphs are a visualization of the data, so the curves correlate to the number of people infected with COVID-19 and the spread of the virus. The higher the curve is, the more people have contracted the virus. However, when the curve from the \u201cSocial Distancing\u201d graph was examined, it was noticeably flatter in comparison to the \u201cNot Social Distancing\u201d graph. The flatter curve on the \u201cSocial Distancing Graph\u201d tells us that the practice of keeping physical distance will actually prevent the spread of the virus. This is where the term <em><strong>\u201cflattening the curve\u201d<\/strong><\/em> comes from!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">INTERACTIVE MATLAB Social Distancing vs Non-Social Distancing MODEL: <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open the following&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/matlab.mathworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a><\/li><li>Login with with MATLAB account.<\/li><li>Open folder \u201cCOVID-19 Interactive Models\u201d<\/li><li>Find the file &#8220;SIR_Social_Distancing.m\u201d<\/li><li>Right click the file and hit \u201cRun\u201d <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p> <br> <strong><em>Experts use the outcomes from these models to justify actions taken inn regards to public safety, such as the closing of \u201cnon-essential\u201d businesses, transitioning to remote schooling, and mandating a \u201cStay At Home\u201d order.
