Habitat shot, Lou Campbell Preserve, Ohio DNR<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"SpellE\"><b><i>Lupinus<\/i><\/b><\/span><b><i> <span class=\"SpellE\">perennis<\/span> <\/i><\/b>(<span class=\"SpellE\">Fabaceae<\/span>), the perennial lupine, is an important plant of the oak openings habitat around Lake Erie. Aside from its beauty, it provides an important floral resource for native bumble bees and solitary bees, and is a host plant for several rare and endangered butterflies, including the <span class=\"SpellE\">Karner<\/span> Blue, the <span class=\"SpellE\">Persius<\/span> Dusky Wing, and Frosted Elfin.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bgsu.edu\/departments\/biology\/people\/faculty\/michaels\/research.html\">Dr. Helen Michaels (Bowling Green State University)<\/a><\/span>, and several graduate students, I am investigating the effects of plant population size and density on reproductive success of Lupines in several oak-openings populations in <span class=\"SpellE\">NorthWestern<\/span> Ohio.
