Preprints\u00a0\u2013\u00a0complete, public drafts of scientific documents that are not yet certified by peer reviewed \u2013\u00a0are\u00a0playing a key role in accelerating dissemination of research on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19,\u00a0highlighting\u00a0a need\u00a0for broader discovery and distribution of early\u00a0research\u00a0results in literature searches.\u00a0Responding to this urgent need,\u00a0the National Library of Medicine\u00a0(NLM)\u00a0has\u00a0launched\u00a0the\u00a0NIH Preprint Pilot<\/a>,\u00a0which will test the viability of making preprints searchable in\u00a0PubMed Central (PMC)<\/a>\u00a0and discoverable in\u00a0PubMed<\/a>,\u00a0starting with\u00a0preprints reporting NIH supported COVID-19 research.\u00a0The pilot is expected to run for a minimum of 12 months, and lessons learned during that time will inform future NLM efforts with preprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NIH Preprint Pilot builds on\u00a0the\u00a0March 2017 NIH\u00a0Guide Notice NOT-OD-17-050<\/a> which encouraged NIH investigators\u00a0to use interim research products, such as preprints, to speed the dissemination and enhance the rigor of their work. It also complements PMC\u2019s role as the archive\u00a0for peer-reviewed author manuscripts supported by NIH\u00a0under the Public Access Policy<\/a>,\u00a0seeking to accelerate\u00a0broad discovery\u00a0to these results\u00a0in cases where investigators choose to post a preprint.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NLM\u2019s\u00a0efforts for the first phase\u00a0build\u00a0on the work of the NIH Office of Portfolio Analysis iSearch\u00a0COVID-19 Portfolio<\/a>. NLM\u00a0is using\u00a0this resource to identify\u00a0preprints reporting on COVID-19 research\u00a0that are authored by NIH staff or by extramural grantees who acknowledge support of an NIH award.\u00a0The initial\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0collection of preprints added to PMC is expected to grow as curation workflows are refined and expanded.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In future phases, the NIH Preprint Pilot\u00a0can be extended\u00a0across the spectrum of NIH research. To\u00a0minimize effort required by NIH-funded\u00a0investigators to make their preprints discoverable via PMC, there will not be a new submission process or system to add preprints to PMC. Rather, NLM will work directly with preprint servers, and NIH-funded investigators are strongly encouraged to follow the\u00a0preprint process outlined in the\u00a02017 Guide Notice:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
