Make a Difference Day / Operation Evergreen Fall 2018

This year’s Make a Difference Day/Operation Evergreen was held in the UA Student Union as part of “Five Star Fridays” – an initiative at UA to provide experiential and service learning opportunities to UA students.

Pam Duncan and Anthony Serpette were on hand to teach the UA students some paperfolding to make ornaments to send – along with live Christmas trees – to troops stationed overseas during the holidays.

Check out some pictures from the event:

Thank you to Anthony Ross!

A special shout out to Anthony (Tony) Ross for serving a three-year term (2015-2018) as a member of the Staff Employee Advisory Committee (SEAC) and representative to the University Council’s Recreation and Wellness Committee. Tony’s contributions to our staff and campus community are valued and truly appreciated.

We’re pleased to know that Tony has accepted the appointment of an Ex-officio member to SEAC for the upcoming year. Thanks Tony!

Make a Difference Day – Operation Evergreen 2017

Once again, UA staff joined with student participating in Make a Difference Day to support Operation Evergreen.  The combined group made ornaments to be sent along with cut trees to service personal serving overseas during the holidays.  Most of the ornaments were assembled from kits, but a few brave folks tried their hand at some paper folding.

Staff and Contract Professionals participating included:

  • Danica Houle from CBA
  • Laura Spray from HR
  • John Messina from Student Affairs
  • Thad Doyle from Student Life
  • Anthony Serpette from UCM

Thanks to everyone that participated – check out the photos below!

Ronald McDonald House – December 2016

The Akron Ronald McDonald House is under construction, but the main part of the house was in need of a serious cleaning to start off the month of December.

The two person crew mopped floors, vacuumed, wiped down all the surfaces, and took out the trash.  Lots of work, but the RMH staff appreciated our help.

Holiday Tree Festival 2016

This year, SEAC participated in the 35th Annual Holiday Tree (and Wreath) Festival to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital.   Here’s our entry:

For about $7 in materials, the wreath went for $50!

More information on the event can be found here: Holiday Tree Festival

Special thanks to the SEAC Committee for the idea and to Laura Spray for helping coordinate the project.

Hmmm… maybe a group folding project next year to make ornaments?  I think we could do a tree.  🙂

Akron Rubber Ducks 2016

The SEAC game night at with the Akron Rubber Ducks took place on Saturday, June 25th. What was actually going to be a single game, 7:05 p.m. start, was later announced as a double header.  Gates opened at 5 p.m. with the first game beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the second game started 30 minutes after the first game ended.  Each game consisted of seven innings.

The SEAC reserved seats were in Section 11 between home plate and first base. Weather conditions were sunny and 90 degrees.  Many people moved from the section to cool down and get out of the direct sun.

68 staff members enjoyed an evening at the ballpark courtesy of SEAC – big thanks to Peggy for coordinating the event!

Every Square Inch

SEAC was out in full force at the Ronald McDonald House for a cleaning session.

Bonnie and Peggy wiped down every surface in the building.

He couldn’t hear me.  Ed was on the vacuum.

Floor to ceiling, top to bottom – every square inch of the Ronald McDonald house got a thorough cleaning.  Go, SEAC!

Baking up a storm

The galloping gourmet bakers of SEAC made another great contribution to the Ronald McDonald House. Here’s the Thank You from RMH:

Dear Laura, Theresa & Bonnie-
We hope you had a great time volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House of Akron. Thank you so much for baking treats for our families. It is because of volunteers like you that the House can keep families together when they need each other most. Your time TRULY makes a difference! We hope you will remain involved and continue to support the Ronald McDonald House of Akron.

We look forward to seeing you again!
