In these time-limited, structured labs students don\u2019t get a real impression of the research environment, but based on these experiences decide that biology is \u201c<em>not for them<\/em>.\u201d But studies suggest that students who have an early experience with research tend to continue to pursue a scientific career. This is particularly true for student underrepresented in science (<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/article-abstract\/68\/3\/204\/4831122?redirectedFrom=fulltext\">read article on this topic<\/a>). Research opportunities allow students to become part of the research process and feel more connected to their disciplines after their experiences. Such schools highly value research experiences for undergraduates in their selection of the best candidates for their programs.\u00a0 Additionally, the faculty mentoring students conducting research will write the best letters of recommendation for these students when they do apply to professional or graduate schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The tiered mentoring program is designed for students to be both <em>mentees<\/em> and eventually <em>mentors<\/em>. Each student is encouraged to participate for a minimum of two years in the same lab. In the first year, the student is the \u201cmentee\u201d and learns the various aspects of the research and how to fit into the research group. In the second year, the student becomes the <em>mentor<\/em> for new students joining the following year. The faculty member and graduate student will direct the overall research project, and initially will provide a good deal of instruction to the tiered mentoring student. As time progresses, the tiered mentoring student will become more and more independent as they evolve into their own role within the research group.
