We launched the eighth iteration of the Thomas Edison Innovation Law and Policy Fellowship in March and welcomed our 2022-2023 cohort of Fellows in the <a href=\"https:\/\/idia.gmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Innovation Pilot Space<\/a> at Mason Square (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmu.edu\/news\/2022-03\/mason-square-will-be-arlingtons-economic-development-epicenter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formerly Arlington Campus<\/a>). April was marked by a <a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/conferences-events\/beyond-the-notes-with-maria-schneider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fireside chat<\/a> between GRAMMY Award-winning composer <strong>Maria Schneider<\/strong> and C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> Senior Fellow for Copyright Research and Policy and Senior Scholar <strong>Sandra Aistars<\/strong>; a World IP Day <a href=\"https:\/\/itif.org\/events\/2022\/04\/26\/ip-stories-innovating-better-future-world-ip-day-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webinar<\/a> co-hosted with <a href=\"https:\/\/itif.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITIF<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/geneva-network.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geneva Network<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudson.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hudson Institute<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propertyrightsalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Property Rights Alliance<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamber.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Chamber of Commerce<\/a>; and an academic roundtable, Ensuring Diversity and Inclusivity in Copyright, held in person in California. In May, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> also hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/conferences-events\/from-great-ideas-to-global-impact-a-talk-with-andrew-byrnes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talk<\/a> by technology executive, attorney, and investor <strong>Andrew Byrnes<\/strong> and completed preparations for the virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/wipo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 WIPO-U.S. Summer School on Intellectual Property<\/a>, which ran for the first two weeks in June and will feature in our next report.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, all of our programs and publications show why we are now a Top 20 IP Program in US News. We\u2019re looking forward to many more excellent events and scholarship within the coming months! In the meantime, I wish you a great summer and the best of health.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Celebrating One Year as C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>!<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7681\" src=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/06\/UL_C-IP2_4c_tall.png\" alt=\"C-IP2 logo\" width=\"176\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This July 1, our center celebrates a year since our name change from \u201cCPIP\u201d to the <strong>Center for Intellectual Property x Innovation Policy (<\/strong><strong>C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>, also: C-IP2)<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re still adjusting to saying \u201cthe Center for Intellectual Property <em>by<\/em> Innovation Policy\u201d and \u201c<em>sip-squared<\/em>\u201d\u2014but it\u2019s catching on!<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, though, we\u2019re excited to see how the name change has and continues to facilitate our center\u2019s mission to \u201cproduc[e] research, education, and service at the intersection of IP and innovation policy to better understand and shape the means of innovation as a positive force for good.\u201d We are excited that the name change has already broadened our reach and impact and allowed us to invite a number of scholars, speakers, and commentators whom we were eager to collaborate with but with whom we had not worked previously. This widening of our circle of collaborators was both the right thing to do on its own and likely contributed to our new Top 20 status in the latest U.S. News IP specialty rankings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> Hosted &amp; Co-Hosted Events<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Thomas Edison Innovation Law and Policy Fellowship <\/strong><br \/>\nOn March 24-25, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> hosted the first in person meeting of the <strong>2022-2023 Thomas Edison Innovation Law and Policy Fellowship<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/fellowships-grants\/thomas-edison-innovation-fellowship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edison Fellowship<\/a>, now in its eighth iteration, is a year-long non-resident fellowship program that brings together a group of scholars to develop research papers on intellectual property law and policy. The 2022-2023 Distinguished Commentators include Professors <strong>John Duffy<\/strong>, <strong>Justin Hughes<\/strong>, <strong>Zorina Khan<\/strong>, <strong>Michael Risch<\/strong>, and <strong>Mark Schultz<\/strong>, and this year\u2019s Fellows include Prof. <strong>Sandra Aistars<\/strong>, <strong>Mary Catherine Amerine<\/strong>, <strong>Jeffrey Depp<\/strong>, <strong>Melissa Eckhause<\/strong>, Dr. <strong>Ani Harutyanyan<\/strong>, <strong>William Matcham<\/strong>, Dr. <strong>Jonathan Putnam<\/strong>, <strong>Kirk Sigmon<\/strong>, <strong>Carolina Torres-Sarmiento<\/strong>, and <strong>Yao Zhou<\/strong>. The program is led by Prof. <strong>Eric Claeys<\/strong>, Prof. <strong>Sean O\u2019Connor<\/strong>, and <strong>Joshua Kresh<\/strong>. This year\u2019s paper topics include fair use and remastering copyrighted material, cross-country analysis of intellectual property rights, standards and green technology, public-private collaboration and IP rights, copyright and public art, image licensing in the digital age, antitrust and SEPs, and a critique of the Andy Warhol Foundation decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fireside Chat<\/strong><br \/>\nOn April 14, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> and George Mason University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/artsmanagement.gmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arts Management Program<\/a> co-hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/cfa.calendar.gmu.edu\/beyond-the-notes-with-maria-schneider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fireside chat<\/a>, <strong>Beyond the Notes with Maria Schneider &#8211; A Conversation about Respecting Artist Rights<\/strong>, with GRAMMY Award-winning composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariaschneider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Maria Schneider<\/strong><\/a> and Prof. <strong>Sandra Aistars<\/strong> as part of Ms. Schneider\u2019s activities as an Artist-in-Residence with Mason\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cfa.gmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for the Arts<\/a>. You can read about the event on C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/2022\/05\/16\/grammy-winning-composer-and-mason-artist-in-residence-maria-schneider-led-events-across-mason-campuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Webinar<\/strong><br \/>\nOn April 26, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> co-hosted a World IP Day webinar with <a href=\"https:\/\/itif.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information Technology &amp; Innovation Foundation<\/a> (ITIF), <a href=\"https:\/\/geneva-network.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geneva Network<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudson.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hudson Institute<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propertyrightsalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Property Rights Alliance<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamber.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Chamber of Commerce<\/a> entitled <strong>IP Stories: Innovating for a Better Future<\/strong> in which a panel of young professionals across a variety of IP-intensive sectors spoke about IP in their industries. (The event was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.songpreneurs.com\/post\/songpreneurs-participates-in-world-ip-day-event-with-information-technology-innovation-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentioned<\/a> on the website Songpreneurs.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Academic Roundtable<\/strong><br \/>\nOn April 28-29, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> hosted an academic copyright roundtable in Oceanside, California, that focused on <strong>Ensuring Diversity and Inclusivity in Copyright<\/strong>. The event was led by Prof. <strong>Sandra Aistars<\/strong>, who was joined by a group of academics and industry professionals to examine historical critiques of access to the copyright system, to think proactively about how to address such critiques in a way that will ensure a robust copyright regime, and to discuss how to improve access to IP protections for all rights holders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visiting Speaker Event<\/strong><br \/>\nOn May 4, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup> hosted an in-person <a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/conferences-events\/from-great-ideas-to-global-impact-a-talk-with-andrew-byrnes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talk<\/a> with technology executive, attorney, and investor <strong>Andrew Byrnes<\/strong> entitled \u201c<strong>From Great Ideas to Global Impact: A Talk with Andrew Byrne<\/strong>.\u201d Mr. Byrnes discussed the path from developing innovative ideas to achieving broad impact, including key legal issues and business imperatives. Leveraging experiences from his decades-long career in the private and public sectors working alongside innovators and entrepreneurs, Byrnes offered insights on leadership, building high-functioning teams, engaging policymakers, and other critical stakeholders, and navigating existing and emerging regulatory regimes and challenges.
