I am happy to provide our first progress report since I took over on May 25th<\/sup> as Interim Executive Director following Professor Se\u00e1n O\u2019Connor’s return to full-time research and teaching. With this Summer 2023 Progress Report<\/strong>, I am pleased to provide you with updates on what we and our friends and affiliates have been working on from March through May 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n

May was also personally exciting for my family with the birth of our first child, Aviva Lea Kresh.<\/p>\n

In the past few months, C-IP2<\/sup> hosted a virtual conference on Culture & IP: Analogs to Intellectual Property in Different Cultures<\/em>. We also hosted a virtual High Tech Roundtable on IP Licensing & Policy<\/span>, along with a virtual follow-on to our 2022 BioPharma Roundtable.<\/p>\n

Additionally, I am delighted to announce that Judge Susan G. Braden<\/strong>, who has served as our Jurist in Residence, joined our Advisory Board.<\/p>\n

Follow-Up Meeting for December 2022 BioPharma Roundtable<\/strong>
\nOn March 22, C-IP2<\/sup> held a virtual meeting, led by Senior Fellow for Life Sciences & Scholar\u00a0Professor\u00a0Emily Michiko Morris<\/strong>, as a follow-up to our December 2022 BioPharma Roundtable to discuss potential areas of academic research.<\/p>\n

Co-Sponsored Conference<\/strong>
\nC-IP2<\/sup> co-sponsored the Race + IP ’23 Conference<\/a>, which was hosted April 13-15 in person and online \u00ad\u00adby the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.<\/p>\n

High Tech Roundtable on IP Licensing & Policy<\/span><\/strong>
\nOn April 18, C-IP2<\/sup> held a small virtual roundtable, led by Senior Fellow for Innovation Policy & Senior Scholar Dean Kristen Osenga<\/strong>, to identify major areas of interest in high tech licensing and IP and to pinpoint topics of discussion and potential areas for academic research.<\/p>\n

Virtual Conference<\/strong>
\nOn April 27-28, C-IP2<\/sup> hosted a virtual conference<\/a> on Culture & IP: Analogs to Intellectual Property in Different Cultures<\/em>. Cultures influence the development of Intellectual Property systems, and Intellectual Property systems influence how cultures develop. This conference focused on that interplay through the lens of analogs to Intellectual Property in various cultures, bringing together scholars from around the globe to discuss how Intellectual Property systems and their analogs co-exist, influence, and inform each other. Clinic Event<\/strong>
\nOn April 18, Scalia Law’s Arts & Entertainment Advocacy Clinic<\/a>, led by Professor Sandra Aistars<\/strong>, and Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA)<\/a> co-hosted “My Work, Out in the World! Copyright Implications in Public Performances,” an online event in which Student Advocates from the clinic held a discussion on Copyright Law and Public Performance with producers from George Mason University’s Green Machine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

News and Speaking Engagements<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Professor O’Connor Returns to Faculty: <\/strong>After successfully steering Scalia Law\u2019s Center for Intellectual Property x Innovation Policy (C-IP2<\/sup>) through a rebranding and expansion that resulted in a Top 20 ranking for the Law School\u2019s IP Program, Professor Se\u00e1n O\u2019Connor<\/strong> is returning to full time research and teaching. O\u2019Connor will continue on as C-IP2<\/sup>\u2019s Faculty Advisor, while Managing Director Joshua Kresh<\/strong> will assume the role of Interim Executive Director. In March, C-IP2<\/sup> Jurist in Residence Chief Judge Susan G. Braden<\/strong> (Ret.) joined C-IP2<\/sup>‘s Advisory Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2022-2023 Edison Fellow Molly Torsen Stech<\/strong>‘s Fellowship paper<\/a>, Co-Authorship Between Photographers and Portrait Subjects<\/em>, has been published in the Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment and Technology.<\/p>\n

2023-2024 Edison Fellow Dr. Nicola Searle<\/strong> presented on the panel “Playing games and knowing the IP score: content and more in the Metaverse” at the March Seventh Session of the WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and the Metaverse<\/a> (more information<\/a> on the event). A recording<\/a> of the event is available online.<\/p>\n

2023-2024 Edison Fellow Dr. Nicola Searle<\/strong> (Goldsmiths, University of London), who is a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Innovation Management Research (CIMR)<\/a> of Birkbeck, University of London, was featured in an April 12 CIMR video<\/a> on “her key areas of research and contribution of knowledge.”<\/p>\n

On April 25, 2021-2022 Edison Fellow Dr. Jason Lee Guthrie <\/strong>(Clayton State University) published a post<\/a> on C-IP2<\/sup>‘s blog entitled “For You and Me or Private Property?: Evaluating the Copyright Claim in Woody Guthrie\u2019s ‘This Land Is Your Land‘”<\/em> on his Fellowship research.<\/p>\n

In May, C-IP2<\/sup> Board Member the Hon. Paul R. Michel<\/strong> (Ret.) and C-IP2<\/sup> Senior Scholar Professor John F. Duffy <\/strong>submitted an amicus brief<\/a> in support of the petitioners in CareDx, Inc. et al. v. Natera, et al<\/em>. IPWatchdog also covered the brief in the May 31 article<\/a> “SCOTUS Requests Response in CareDx Eligibility Petition Following Michel\/ Duffy Brief.”<\/p>\n
