This program builds on our tradition of fostering cross-border intellectual property education, and we are excited to continue the program going forward.<\/p>\n<p>In August, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geneva-network.com\/\">Geneva Network<\/a>, we hosted our first Stevens International Roundtable on Life Sciences Innovation, which convened a distinguished network of international scholars and practitioners. This foundational event has created promising opportunities for ongoing research partnerships and collaboration in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Although IPPI September activities will be featured in December\u2019s Winter Progress Report, I\u2019m pleased to note a few highlights from this past month, as well:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Professor <strong>Mark Schultz<\/strong> participated in the September 10-12 <a href=\"https:\/\/epip2025.eu\/\">EPIP Annual Conference 2025<\/a> in Antwerp, Belgium. He also spoke at the September 23 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtipa.org\/summits-1\/gtipa-summit-2025\">GTIPA Summit<\/a> 2025 and co-organized and participated in a September 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/itif.org\/events\/2025\/09\/24\/life-sciences-innovation-forum-argentina-2025\/\">Life Sciences Innovation Forum<\/a>, all in Buenos Aires, Argentina.<\/li>\n<li>IPPI hosted our first <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/edison-fellowship\/\">Edison Fellowship<\/a> meeting on site at The University of Akron\u2019s School of Law in Ohio.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, in August, Professor <strong>Emily Michiko Morris<\/strong> and I recorded a <a href=\"https:\/\/leerink.com\/podcast\/the-ip-policy-institutes-joshua-kresh-and-emily-michiko-morris\/\">podcast<\/a> with Leerink Partners that was published this past month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More details are to follow about these and other events in our next update.<\/p>\n<p>As we transition into fall, we are actively developing our next series of roundtables focusing on Life Sciences, High Tech, and Copyright issues, with several events planned through the winter months. We are also excited to announce preliminary planning for our first <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/events\/ippi-2026-winter-institute\/\">Winter Institute<\/a>, scheduled for February 26, 2026, in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, several scholarly publications and brief commentary pieces are in development and will be released throughout the fall quarter. As WIPO\u2019s only U.S.-based Summer School, this annual program is a two-week, online course that focuses on IP law in the United States of America. The program consists of lectures, case studies, simulation exercises, and group discussions on selected IP topics, with an orientation towards the interface between IP and other disciplines. This year, we were honored to have over thirty students\u2014law students, young professionals, and more\u2014hailing from Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Egypt, Finland, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Mexico, Pakistan, the People&#8217;s Republic of China, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, Tunisia, T\u00fcrkiye, the UAE, and the United States.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>(Virtual) Panel on &#8220;Investing in Ideas: The Power of Public Research&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On June 11, as part of the WIPO-U.S. Summer School on IP, IPPI and IPPI Institutional Partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usipalliance.org\/\">USIPA<\/a> co-hosted an open-to-the-public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Sb-vLE8ptB8\">webinar<\/a> on public funding for universities, a topic that has become increasingly important. This panel explored basic research\u2019s role in driving innovation and educating our future. Our speakers\u2014including panelists <strong>Kate Hudson<\/strong> (AAU),\u00a0 <strong>Catalina Isaza Falla<\/strong> (INNMETEC), <strong>Dr. Mark Rohrbaugh<\/strong> (Acierto Innovations Consulting; Formerly NIH; a 2025 recipient of the\u00a0Bayh-Dole Coalition&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bayhdolecoalition.org\/awards\/?mc_cid=73f9f9096f&amp;mc_eid=9c1a189660\">American Innovator Award<\/a>), <strong>Stephen J. Susalka<\/strong> (AUTM), and moderator <strong>Joshua Kresh<\/strong>\u2014discussed both the broader landscape and specific examples of professors whose research has led to publicly accessible innovations and tangible real-world impact.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>July Events in Geneva, Switzerland<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>On July 7, IPPI partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glipa.org\/\">GLIPA<\/a> to co-host a <strong>Reception<\/strong> to mark the start of the 2025 WIPO General Assemblies. Professors <strong>Mark Schultz<\/strong> and <strong>Emily Michiko Morris<\/strong> co-organized and participated in the event on behalf of IPPI.<\/li>\n<li>On July 9, IPPI partnered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/itif.org\/\">Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/innovationcouncil.org\/\">Innovation Council<\/a> to co-host an in-person <strong>Lunchtime Discussion on Gender and IP<\/strong>. Participants discussed forthcoming guidance for IP offices working to expand women\u2019s access to the IP system and identified promising policies and practices from the countries represented\u2014covering the IP offices of Canada, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Patent Office\u2014with the goal of publishing these as case studies. Professors <strong>Mark Schultz<\/strong> and <strong>Emily Michiko Morris <\/strong>co-organized and participated in the event on behalf of IPPI.<\/li>\n<li>On July 10, IPPI partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/geneva-network.com\/\">Geneva Network<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/itif.org\/\">ITIF<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/innovationcouncil.org\/\">Innovation Council<\/a> to host an <strong>Innovate4Health Luncheon Discussion<\/strong> in tandem with the WIPO General Assemblies. The purpose of this discussion was to unpack the contribution of IP to health innovation, and the broad diffusion of health technologies, in emerging countries. Exciting case studies were featured from various countries\u2014Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, and Uganda\u2014showcasing how entrepreneurs from emerging economies are solving global health challenges and bringing life-saving innovations to market with the help of IP. A discussion was also featured on how new case studies from other countries can be shared in future editions to help promote local innovation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.itif.org\/2024-i4h-ip-innovation-health.pdf\">read Innovate4Health\u2019s 2024 edition<\/a>). The lunch was hosted by <strong>Jennifer Brant<\/strong> (Innovation Council), <strong>Stephen Ezell<\/strong> (ITIF), and Professors <strong>Mark Schultz<\/strong> and <strong>Emily Michiko Morris<\/strong> (IPPI). Confirmed attendees included WIPO Assistant Director General <strong>Marco Aleman<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>(Hybrid) The Stevens Roundtable on Life Sciences Innovation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On August 5, IPPI and <a href=\"https:\/\/geneva-network.com\/\">Geneva Network<\/a> co-hosted the inaugural Stevens Roundtable on Life Sciences Innovation in Washington, D.C., convening newly invited members of the Global Research Network on Life Sciences Innovation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Global Research Network on Life Sciences Innovation: <\/strong>This new network connects scholars from the United States, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and Europe to share research and ideas about designing institutions that foster innovation in intellectual property and life sciences. This policy brief presents recent empirical findings on patent quality, highlights the limitations of certain metrics as a measure of patent quality, and proposes viable reforms aimed at reducing application backlogs while maintaining high patent quality.
