Spring has been a productive season at IPPI, and we have continued building our community of scholars, engaging in the policy and legal debates shaping IP law, producing rigorous research, and bringing IP to broader audiences.<\/p>\r\n
We welcomed a promising new cohort of the Edison Fellowship<\/a> and convened the inaugural calls of our High Tech and Biopharma Scholars Councils, which are already generating research ideas and giving scholars a venue to share their work. Our fellows and affiliates carried that scholarship into the public square, speaking at USPTO listening sessions, filing an amicus brief in Hikma v. Amarin<\/em><\/a>, and publishing the first reports in our series on biopharma patent myths<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n This June, as will be detailed in our next report, we also turned outward to the public, hosting a webinar<\/a> on those myths and pending legislation, running another WIPO-U.S. Summer School on IP<\/a>, and marking America’s 250th<\/sup> anniversary with a virtual panel<\/a> on the four pillars of IP and their place in our national story.<\/p>\r\n As always, we have projects on the way and will share details as things progress.<\/p>\r\n Best regards,<\/p>\r\n <\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n These are events either hosted or co-hosted by members of On March 12-13, IPPI hosted the first meeting of the 2026-2027 Thomas Edison Innovation Law and Policy Fellowship in New Orleans, Louisiana. Meeting One was for the purpose of the Edison Fellows presenting their research proposals. Edison Fellows submitted brief synopses detailing their proposed theses and research, and Distinguished Commentators and other Edison Fellows commented on the research proposals.<\/p>\r\n These are news and speaking engagements for members of In March 2026, IPPI Advisory Board Member the Hon. Paul R. Michel<\/strong> (Former Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit) submitted an amicus<\/em> “Brief of Former Federal Circuit Chief Judge Paul R. Michel and Scholars of Law and Economics as Amici Curiae in Support of Respondents<\/a>” in\u00a0Hikma Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. et al., v. Amarin Pharma, Inc. et al.<\/em>, to the Supreme Court of the United States. Other signatories included IPPI\u2019s Joshua Kresh<\/strong>, Emily Michiko Morris<\/strong>, and Mark F. Schultz<\/strong> and IPPI Affiliates Dr.<\/strong> Kristina M. L. Acri, n\u00e9e Lybecker<\/strong>, Michael L. Sichelman<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n In May, IPPI shared new policy research by IPPI scholars that separates myth from reality in current debates over pharmaceutical patents. In this collection of short papers<\/a>\u2014\u201cPharmaceutical \u2018Patent Thickets\u2019 and \u201cPharmaceutical Patent \u2018Evergreening’\u201d\u2014Mark F. Schultz<\/strong> and Douglas S. Park<\/strong>, together with Jennifer L. Brant<\/strong>, challenge common narratives about pharmaceutical patenting practices with real-world evidence.<\/p>\r\n In April, IPPI welcomed Dr. Andrew P. Vassallo<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Economics and Chair of the Economics Department at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and 2025-2026 Edison Fellow, and Professor Francesca Ferrari<\/strong>, Professor of Civil Procedure Law at the University of Insubria \u2013 Como\/Varese, Italy, as IPPI Senior Scholars.
