We ran the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/events\/wipo\/\">WIPO-U.S. Summer School on Intellectual Property<\/a>, which drew participants from more than fifteen countries and included the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=14JbsXa8Icc\">virtual panel &#8220;IP at America&#8217;s 250<sup>th<\/sup><\/a>,\u201d co-hosted with <a href=\"https:\/\/c4ip.org\/\">C4IP<\/a>. We were also active in the policy space with a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1670\/2026\/07\/Academic-letter-in-support-of-PERA_accessible.pdf\">letter<\/a> before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in support of the Patent Eligibility Restoration Act (PERA), for which IPPI Advisory Board Member the <strong>Hon. Andrei Iancu<\/strong> also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/committee-activity\/hearings\/from-genes-to-machines-the-patent-eligibility-debate\">testified<\/a>; in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1670\/2026\/07\/IPPI-Comment-on-OMB-2026-0034_accessible.pdf\">comment<\/a> to the Office of Management and Budget; and in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1670\/2026\/06\/IPPI-Letter-re-MAPIA-June-2026.pdf\">letter<\/a> to the Senate HELP Committee on the Medication Affordability and Patent Integrity Act.<\/p>\r\n<p>Our scholars were also active over the summer. IPPI-affiliated researchers published new work on pharmaceutical patents, AI patent litigation, FRAND licensing, trade secrets, copyright, and the evolving role of IP in technology ecosystems, including two newly published <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/ualawip\/edison-fellowship\/\">Edison Fellowship<\/a> papers by former Fellows <strong>Matthew Sipe<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Andrew Vassallo<\/strong>, as well as current Edison Fellow <strong>David Atkinson<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/our-artificial-future\/C2AED5B20A86EC769C4FEE61E81F1203\">new book<\/a> from Cambridge University Press on generative AI and the law. Our scholars presented at leading venues around the world, from S\u00e3o Paulo to Dublin to Stanford, and were quoted widely in outlets ranging from Bloomberg Law to Al Jazeera to the Washington Examiner.<\/p>\r\n<p>Moving into the final months of 2026, we held our second meeting of this year\u2019s <strong>Edison Fellowship<\/strong> just this past week (more to come on those papers later), and we will be announcing the next round (2027-2028) of Edison applications soon. WIPO\u2019s only U.S.-based Summer School, this annual program is a two-week, online course focusing on IP law in the United States and consisting of lectures, case studies, simulation exercises, and group discussions on selected IP topics, with an orientation towards the interface between IP and other disciplines. This year, we were joined by law students, professionals, and other students of IP from Brazil, Canada, China, Ghana, India, Latvia, Malawi, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, Saudia Arabia, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, and the United States. In the wake of the June 4 House Judiciary Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/committee-activity\/hearings\/medicines-and-ip-balancing-innovation-and-access\">hearing on \u201cMedicines and IP: Balancing Innovation and Access,\u201d<\/a> the panel unpacked prevailing narratives surrounding pharmaceutical patenting, innovation, and generic competition.
