While 2021 has continued to be challenging, we are thankful that our community has stayed strong and thrived, nonetheless. We hope that if the pandemic has directly affected you or your loved ones, you are finding your way back to peace and health. As difficult as these times can be for many of us, I think we all know that it has been even harder for others. Take extra time this holiday season to be with loved ones and reflect on the things we do have.<\/p>\n<p>In this Winter 2021 Progress Report, we include not only our news the last quarter of 2021, but also a recap of major developments this year.<\/p>\n<p>This year we accomplished several major goals that have been in the works for a few years.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><u>Rebranded the Center<\/u>. While our old name had developed good brand recognition, it had outlived much of its original usefulness and did not fully reflect the range of work we do in the innovation ecosystem. It is also important to signal that intellectual property (IP) is a core part of such ecosystems.<\/li>\n<li><u>Formed Advisory Board<\/u>. A strong center such as ours needs the guidance of leaders in IP and innovation. We are so thankful that our \u201cdream team\u201d of influential leaders accepted our invitation to advise us. We were able to transition all of our extensive programming to either fully online or hybrid format. This included the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/wipo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WIPO-U.S. Summer School on Intellectual Property<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/2021-fall-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Annual Fall Conference<\/a>, BioPharma Roundtable, Thomas Edison Innovation Law and Policy Fellowship meetings, and academic conference\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/intellectual-property-and-innovation-policy-for-5g-and-the-internet-of-things\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intellectual Property and Innovation Policy for 5G and the Internet of Things<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>2022 will be our tenth year as an academic center, and we are excited to see how C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0continues to grow in the years ahead. Meeting 2 of the Fellowship was held September 23-24 at George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. This meeting was devoted to the Edison Fellows\u2019 presenting their draft works-in-progress that they researched and drafted over the summer months of 2021.\u00a0Each Edison Fellow received extensive feedback during presentation sessions devoted to each draft work-in-progress, including specific commentary from the Distinguished Senior Commentators. The session, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/waladc-shorts-ent-law-101-for-filmmakers-walagmu-legal-clinic-tickets-167071440175?aff=efbneb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entertainment Law 101 for Filmmakers<\/a>,\u201d was held virtually on September 11 and featured WALA\u2019s Brian Frankel, Maggie Gladson, John Mason, and the Clinic\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Prof. Sandra Aistars and Terrica Carrington.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On October 13-14, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0hosted our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/2021-fall-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Virtual Annual Fall Conference<\/a>, with\u00a0<em>Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property<\/em>\u00a0as this year\u2019s theme. This year\u2019s Annual Conference was structured around Professor\u00a0<strong>Ryan Abbott<\/strong>\u2019s forthcoming edited volume\u00a0<em>Research Handbook on Intellectual Property and Artificial Intelligence<\/em>, which is being funded in part by a C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0Da Vinci Grant.\u00a0The conference included panels covering the current state of the art in AI and how the various types of IP rights interact with AI in diverse and sometimes controversial contexts\u2013\u2013such as authorship of AI-generated works, changing inventive step analysis, data and text mining exceptions, deep fakes, and more. The event also featured keynote speakers\u00a0<strong>Grimes<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jaron Lanier<\/strong>, who participated in a fireside chat with C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0Faculty Director\u00a0<strong>Sean O\u2019Connor<\/strong>. The conference was connected with and featured many speakers who are writing for the upcoming\u00a0<em>Research Handbook on Intellectual Property and Artificial Intelligence<\/em>\u00a0in the Research Handbooks in Intellectual Property Series by Edward Elgar (Forthcoming 2022), an edited volume with contributions from an internationally leading group of authors from academia, practice, and government that provides a broad overview of research in AI &amp; IP as well as a deep critical examination.\u00a0Conference videos are available on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/cip2gmu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>&#8216;s YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On November 18, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0hosted an\u00a0<strong>academic roundtable<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<em>Intellectual Property and Biopharmaceutical Policy<\/em>\u00a0in person at and virtually from George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School. The roundtable consisted of presentations of works in progress on topics including evergreening and time to generic entry, regulatory exclusivities, the history of Bayh-Dole, potential trade secret waivers, and more.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>News &amp; Speaking Engagements<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>In September 2021, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0RAs and Scalia Law students\u00a0<strong>Kyle Maxey<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>David Ward<\/strong>\u00a0began fall internships with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/copyrightalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyright Alliance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In September<strong>, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup><\/strong>, in conjunction with Mason\u2019s Center for Government Contracting at the School of Business, won a Department of Defense IP study contract \u00a0on a study for Washington Headquarters Services covering the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and defense laboratories\u2019 contracting and intellectual property management policies and their effects on commercialization of and further innovation in dual-use technology.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/executivegov.com\/2021\/11\/george-mason-university-wins-dod-contract-for-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0for more details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masami Kawase<\/strong>\u00a0(JIPO)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/about\/our-team\/masami-kawase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined<\/a>\u00a0C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0as a Visiting Scholar in September! While here, Masami will be working on a research project covering valuation of patents in the US and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>In September, C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cip2.gmu.edu\/about\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">welcomed<\/a>\u00a0Professors\u00a0<strong>Daryl Lim<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Irina D. Manta<\/strong>\u00a0as Senior Scholars.<\/p>\n<p>C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0Faculty Director\u00a0<strong>Sean O\u2019Connor<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and C-IP<sup>2<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/idia.gmu.edu\/research-spotlight-on-sean-oconnor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were featured<\/a>\u00a0in the &#8220;Research Spotlight&#8221; put out by Mason\u2019s Institute for Digital InnovAtion (IDIA) in their &#8220;The Weekly&#8221; newsletter on October 10.<\/p>\n<p>C-IP<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a02021-2022 Edison Fellow and USPTO Attorney Advisor, Copyright Law and Policy\u00a0<strong>Molly Torsen Stech<\/strong>\u00a0moderated a panel discussion co-hosted by the USPTO and USCO on October 26 for the virtual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/copyright.gov\/events\/machine-learning\/?loclr=twcop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conference<\/a>\u00a0<em>Copyright Law and Machine Learning for AI: Where Are We and Where Are We Going?<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On October 26, Prof.\u00a0<strong>Sandra Aistars<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Terrica Carrington<\/strong>\u00a0led Antonin Scalia Law School\u2019s Arts &amp; Entertainment Advocacy Clinic in co-hosting a virtual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/copyright-law-social-media-chat-legal-clinic-tickets-180281616167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online chat and legal clinic<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<em>Copyright Law, Choreography, and Social Media<\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/waladc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts<\/a>\u00a0(WALA).
