These poems explore a space between environmental crisis and a crisis of conscience. As a lyric collection,\u00a0<em>Hawk Parable<\/em>\u00a0begins as a meditation on the author\u2019s grandfather\u2019s possible involvement in the Nagasaki mission and moves through poems that engage with the legacy of nuclear testing on our global environment.\u00a0At times,\u00a0<em>Hawk Parable\u00a0<\/em>borrows language from declassified nuclear test films, survivor accounts of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, scientific studies of bird migrations through the Nevada Test Site, and the author\u2019s grandfather\u2019s letters.\u00a0This book enacts what it means to encounter fragments\u2014of historical records, family stories, and survivor accounts\u2014through exploring a variety of forms.\u00a0<em>Hawk Parable<\/em>\u00a0seeks what it means to be human in the spaces between tragedy and beauty, loss and life, in the relationships between the lyric speaker, history, and personal memory.<\/p>\n<h3>About the author<\/h3>\n<div class=\"author\">\n<p>Tyler Mills is the author of two books of poems,\u00a0<em>Hawk Parable<\/em>\u00a0(winner of the 2017 Akron Poetry Prize) and\u00a0<em>Tongue Lyre<\/em>\u00a0(winner of the 2011 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award). Her poems have appeared in\u00a0<em>The New Yorker<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Poetry<\/em>, and her essays have appeared in\u00a0<em>AGNI<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Copper Nickel<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Rumpus<\/em>.
