W<\/span>hen the speaker\u2019s Iranian grandmother who read fortunes passes away, she begins to understand that <\/span>she\u2019s<\/span> inherited her grandmother\u2019s gifts. Without an initiation to forecasting, the speaker is left to make sense of her history and her future through signs and experiences she <\/span>can\u2019t<\/span> explain. <\/span>The poems excavate the past to make sense of loss and inheritance, of magic and fate.<\/span> Teeming with foxes and birds, <\/span><\/span>Malak<\/span><\/span><\/em> translates <\/span>what\u2019s<\/span> seen and unseen, and what can be heard in the quie<\/span>t.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
