{"id":10427,"date":"2018-08-20T12:35:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T16:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=10427"},"modified":"2018-08-20T12:35:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T16:35:01","slug":"ikea-table-hack-memorial-plaques-and-kids-day-of-safety-and-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2018\/08\/20\/ikea-table-hack-memorial-plaques-and-kids-day-of-safety-and-play\/","title":{"rendered":"IKEA table hack, memorial plaques, and Kids Day of Safety and Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Today marks the final week of summer as Fall 2018 semester begins next week.\u00a0 The 3D Lab received a lot of patronage over the break; community members and students worked on projects in the Lab literally every day of the week.\u00a0 We hosted three groups of kids the past two weeks alone.\u00a0 The Wayne College Lab truly is a community resource where imagination is made and young minds are inspired to become makers and (hopefully) budding engineers.\u00a0 All of this is made possible from the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/community-support\/\">many sponsors<\/a> through the past several years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 3D Lab is open to the community all semester, so feel free to stop-in to get creative!\u00a0 The lab is open from 8:00 a.m. \u2013 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; expanded Fall hours will be posted soon.\u00a0 Group tours are welcome; please let us know the day &amp; time that your group plans to arrive to ensure staff availability.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10451\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/08\/lincoln-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A couple weeks ago, former 3D Lab staff Nathan and a fellow student stopped by the 3D Lab to \u201chack\u201d an inexpensive IKEA table into a 3D printer enclosure.\u00a0 A common problem with 3D printers is printing with ABS plastic.\u00a0 ABS is a desired print material because of its resistance to heat and sunlight, making it suitable for car parts and anything exposed to the outdoors.\u00a0 But printing with ABS is challenging.\u00a0 Objects can shrink during printing, resulting in warped edges and cracked\/separated layers.\u00a0 By placing a 3D printer in a warm environment (such as an enclosed box), the plastic cools slowly, resulting in more successful prints.<\/p>\n<p>Repurposing IKEA products is nothing new.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructables.com\/howto\/ikea\/\">Checkout all of these awesome project ideas<\/a> from common IKEA products!\u00a0 Nathan and his friend used the Makerbot in our lab to make custom adapter hardware for the table, the yellow parts in the photo below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10435\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180810_101801-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10439\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/08\/IMG_20180810_101715-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They purchased acrylic sheets to form the walls of the enclosure, modified with tools in the 3D Lab to fit the table. \u00a0Neodymium magnets were used to make the clear panels easily removable.\u00a0 We are excited to see the finished product, complete with printer installed!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Late last month, we were honored and humbled to take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifecarehospice.org\/\">LifeCare Hospice Bereavement Services<\/a> from Wooster, Ohio.\u00a0 LifeCare Hospice provides a comprehensive program of compassionate care for all individuals experiencing the impact of serious illness and loss.<\/p>\n<p>Lynn Lilly and a colleague invited a number of children to the 3D Lab to make memorial plaques to honor lost loved ones.\u00a0 These plaques were created from photo frames donated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgrahamdunn.com\/\">P. Graham Dunn<\/a>.\u00a0 The children were shown how to use Corel DRAW vector-art software to create designs, then laser engraved their designs onto photo frames.\u00a0 The activity meant a lot to the kids, being able to express their feelings in a keepsake.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10443\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/08\/20170811_113137-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10447\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/08\/camp-picture2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to P.
