{"id":10911,"date":"2018-11-28T10:42:23","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T14:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=10911"},"modified":"2018-11-28T10:42:23","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T14:42:23","slug":"laser-engraved-circuit-boards-custom-board-games-and-a-visit-to-lincoln-township-elementary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2018\/11\/28\/laser-engraved-circuit-boards-custom-board-games-and-a-visit-to-lincoln-township-elementary-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Laser engraved circuit boards, custom board games, and a visit to Lincoln Township Elementary School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The end of semester is almost upon us.\u00a0 Engineering students are building battle robots, stair climbing robots, math students are 3D printing rocket models for simulations, a plethora of students building all sorts of personal items, and there is a daily stream of community members and families visiting the lab for tours and creative projects.\u00a0 What a busy semester it has been!\u00a0 The 3D Lab has been a great place for students and community members to hang-out.\u00a0 Even though the semester ends in two weeks, the lab will continue to be a busy place well into the Christmas season.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to attend the Battle Bots tournament, come to the 3D Lab at 2:00 on December 10th.\u00a0 The stair climbing robot competition is on December 5th at 3:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10915\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/IMG_1132-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Christmas, what better way to give a personal gift with something that is created by you!\u00a0 If you like making truly unique items, there are great, low-cost ideas that you can make with a laser engraver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epiloglaser.com\/resources\/sample-club.htm\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 We also have a number of donated items from P. Graham Dunn that you can personalize into gifts as well.\u00a0 Our staff will show you how to use the laser engraver, then you can let your creativity run wild!\u00a0 Check-out these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epiloglaser.com\/resources\/sample-club\/acrylic-inlay-snowflakes.htm\">beautiful snowflake ornaments<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epiloglaser.com\/resources\/sample-club\/engraved-cutting-board.htm\">personalized cutting boards<\/a> that you can make here in the 3D Lab:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10919\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/snowflakes-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10923\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/cutting-board-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t been to the 3D Lab in a while, stop-by to enjoy the energy and camaraderie there, especially over the holiday winter break.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The week before last, Wayne College student Tristan arrived with an interesting laser engraving project.\u00a0 He is building a large, seven-segment display to show the number of \u201clikes\u201d that he receives over time on his YouTube channel.\u00a0 Tristan is building the display from scratch, including a custom circuit board!\u00a0 He literally drew up the design with Microsoft Paint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10927\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/IMG_19700105_100137-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tristan bought some copper plates, then sprayed them with Rustoleum Specialty High Temperature paint typically used for hot outdoor appliances like grills.\u00a0 These painted plates were placed in the engraver, which removed the paint when etching his circuit design, like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10931\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/IMG_19700105_100045-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This creates a negative image of the circuit.\u00a0 Next, the board is soaked in ferric chloride (43% strength) which interacts with the visible copper.\u00a0 The last step is removing the paint which exposes the copper traces underneath the paint.\u00a0 The final step hasn\u2019t been performed on the picture below, but it gives you an idea of the display that Tristan is building.\u00a0 More progress coming soon!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10935\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/IMG_19700105_124034-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Community member Olivia and her husband enjoy playing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catan.com\/\">Settlers of Catan<\/a>, a popular board game.\u00a0 Visiting a local wood store, they acquired some finished wood pieces sold as scraps, then decided to make custom game pieces themselves to enhance the game!<\/p>\n<p>Olivia created the custom designs with CorelDRAW, then used the vector mode of the laser engraver to cut them into interlocking puzzle pieces, just like the Settlers board game pieces.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10939\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2018\/11\/IMG_19700115_064401-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They had good results with painted wood, as the laser engraver burned off the paint, leaving behind a nice contrast of the design.\u00a0 Adjusting the speed of the laser improved the contrast, burning the wood darker.\u00a0 She also created game pieces with natural hickory wood.
