Over the past several years, he used the 3D printers and laser\nengraver in the 3D Lab to create custom props, such as cardboard barricades\nfrom (literally) pizza boxes using 2D design software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/illustrator.html\">Adobe Illustrator<\/a>.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/04\/IMG_19700112_194136-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11475\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/04\/IMG_19700112_194201-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11479\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim also makes amazing three dimensional props in the form of\nmodular buildings made from MDF board and the laser engraver\/cutter.&nbsp; He\ndesigns even these buildings in Illustrator complete with connecting tabs for\nthe walls, ceilings, &amp; floors with connectors for the rooms\nthemselves.&nbsp; The result?&nbsp; All of the rooms below can be connected in\ndifferent ways to make custom shaped buildings for any purpose.&nbsp; It&#8217;s\namazing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/04\/IMG_19700121_034628-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11483\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/04\/IMG_19700121_034617-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11487\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tristan, another one of our students, continues to do\namazing work with custom etched circuit boards using the laser engraver.&nbsp;\nFor a robotics project, he\u2019s been working on a camera slider for fancy YouTube\nrecordings that the human hand couldn&#8217;t possibly recreate.&nbsp; With his\nproject, smooth cinematic shots will be possible due to the bot\u2019s three stepper\nmotors along with multiple sensors which will be implemented to make it user\nfriendly.&nbsp; But how could all of the components fit in one small little\nbox?&nbsp; But the expense of having them produced detoured many electronics\nenthusiasts away from them.&nbsp; So hobbyists did what they do best, they made\ntheir own!&nbsp; While a handful of websites today allow you to purchase a PCB\nfor low-cost, many hands on people found it satisfying to make their own.&nbsp;\nAll it requires is copper plated fiber board, Rustoleum high heat spray paint,\ndiluted ferric chloride (etching solution), and a high wattage laser.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/04\/IMG_19700120_023731-765x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11495\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/04\/IMG_19700120_023712-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11499\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept involves etching away copper with the ferric\nchloride solution.&nbsp; An image is carefully drawn on a computer (Tristan\nused Microsoft Paint) where the copper needs to be etched away from.&nbsp; Once\nthat\u2019s done, the laser engraver is used to \u201cretrace\u201d the image onto the\nboard.&nbsp; By laser engraving the image onto the board, paint is removed and\ncopper is exposed.&nbsp; The PCB is stuck into a ferric chloride solution until\nthe visible copper is dissolved.&nbsp; Lastly, steel wool is used to clean-off\nthe remaining paint and holes are drilled.&nbsp; 3D Lab staff Ashton and Thomas showed these young adults how the\nmachines work and helped them print objects and make designs with the laser\nengraver.&nbsp; Many of them had never seen a 3D printer before;
