<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe Daily Record said it best: \u201cDubbed the \u2018Greatest Show and\nTell on Earth\u2019; over 1,300 people<\/strong> flocked to the second annual faire at the University\nof Akron Wayne College last May. It was a fresh experience with favorite makers from last year<\/strong> coming back along\nwith new makers<\/strong> and new things to see\nand do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We need volunteers to help at the Learn To Solder\nbooth at the Wayne County Mini Maker Faire.<\/strong> \nSponsored by RBB Systems, this is a popular booth for kids and adults\nalike. Attendees solder components onto a robot \u201cbadges\u201d with glowing\neyes that they can take home with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Currently, we do not\nhave enough volunteers<\/strong> to run this booth and can certainly use your help! One of these people is Rob Gregory.<\/strong> He owns and maintains an old\nfashioned band organ on a trailer. Also known as fairground\norgans, these are designed for use in a commercial public fairground setting to\nprovide loud music to accompany fairground rides\nand attractions,<\/strong> mostly used on merry-go-rounds. Unlike organs\nintended for indoor use, band organs produce a large volume of sound to be\nheard over and above the noise of crowds of people and fairground machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The precursor to the band organ is a calliope,<\/strong> a musical instrument that produces sound\nby sending a gas, originally steam or more recently compressed air, through\nlarge whistles\u2014originally locomotive whistles. A calliope is typically\nvery loud. Even some small calliopes are audible for miles. There is no way to\nvary tone or loudness. Musically, the only expression possible is the pitch,\nrhythm, and duration of the notes. Rob\u2019s\nband organ is always at hit at the Wayne County Mini Maker faire and we are\nhappy that he is returning again this year!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Another group participating in the Wayne County Mini Maker\nFaire is the Wayne County Public Library.<\/strong> \nTheir mission: to provide an environment that enriches lives and fosters a\nstrong community by offering lifelong learning opportunities. WCPL will\nbring a knitting machine<\/strong> is made by their IT Department using the original\nopen source design Circular\nKnitic<\/a>. 3D printing, laser cutting, yarn, and Arduino combine to make\na machine that creates a knitted tube perfect for scarves. Attendees can\nenter to win a scarf created using the knitting machine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to the knitting machine, Sphero BOLT robots<\/strong> will\nbe on-hand to take for a spin in their custom maze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rounding out our participating makers is Ben Westover.<\/strong> He loves all things\ntechnology, especially retro stuff. Ben is really smart, especially in\nmath (he\u2019s in 9th grade Math as a 7th grader). Ben plays trumpet and\nbaritone in band and likes science, math, and history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At this year\u2019s Maker Faire, Ben I will have Raspberry Pi\u2019s\nrunning emulators of retro computers and video game\nconsoles<\/strong> and will have some of the real hardware too.
