And a Call for Help!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wayne County Mini Maker Faire is a <strong>family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and\nresourcefulness<\/strong> and a celebration of the Maker Movement. &nbsp;It\u2019s\na place where people show what they are making and share what they are\nlearning.&nbsp; Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders\nto scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. Please mark your first and last\nname and email address in the yellow highlighted areas only. &nbsp;We need a\nlot of help to make this work. &nbsp;Thanks for considering to help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/DSC_0766-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11583\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once\nyou have completed the sign-up sheet, click on the link at the bottom of the\nsign-up sheet for contact information and T-shirt size (when you click this\nlink you may see a small box appear with another link that you will have to\nclick to get to the form\u2014just the way Google links work). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are <strong>proud to\nshowcase Ohio makers<\/strong> participating in the Wayne County Mini Maker Faire.&nbsp; One of these people is <strong>Rob Gregory.<\/strong>&nbsp; He owns and maintains an old\nfashioned band organ on a trailer. &nbsp;Also known as fairground\norgans, these are designed for use in a commercial public fairground setting to\nprovide <strong>loud music to accompany fairground rides\nand attractions,<\/strong> mostly used on merry-go-rounds. Unlike organs\nintended for indoor use, band organs produce a large volume of sound to be\nheard over and above the noise of crowds of people and fairground machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/organ.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/organ.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/organ.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/organ.jpg?resize=300,300 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/organ.jpg?resize=425,425 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The precursor to the band organ is a <strong>calliope,<\/strong> a musical instrument that produces sound\nby sending a gas, originally steam or more recently compressed air, through\nlarge whistles\u2014originally locomotive whistles.&nbsp; A calliope is typically\nvery loud. Even some small calliopes are audible for miles. There is no way to\nvary tone or loudness. Musically, the only expression possible is the pitch,\nrhythm, and duration of the notes. &nbsp;<strong>Rob\u2019s\nband organ is always at hit at the Wayne County Mini Maker faire and we are\nhappy that he is returning again this year!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another group participating in the Wayne County Mini Maker\nFaire is the <strong>Wayne County Public Library.<\/strong>&nbsp;\nTheir mission: to provide an environment that enriches lives and fosters a\nstrong community by offering lifelong learning opportunities. &nbsp;WCPL will\nbring a <strong>knitting machine<\/strong> is made by their IT Department using the original\nopen source design <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Circular-Knitic\/\">Circular\nKnitic<\/a>. &nbsp;3D printing, laser cutting, yarn, and Arduino combine to make\na machine that creates a knitted tube perfect for scarves. &nbsp;Attendees can\nenter to win a scarf created using the knitting machine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/Circular-Knitic-1024x427.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11591\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the knitting machine, <strong>Sphero BOLT robots<\/strong> will\nbe on-hand to take for a spin in their custom maze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rounding out our participating makers is <strong>Ben Westover.<\/strong>&nbsp; He loves all things\ntechnology, especially retro stuff. &nbsp;Ben is really smart, especially in\nmath (he\u2019s in 9th grade Math as a 7th grader). &nbsp;Ben plays trumpet and\nbaritone in band and likes science, math, and history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/912e8f46-e6cd-4008-93ef-6756431c8b29-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11595\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At this year\u2019s Maker Faire, Ben I will have Raspberry Pi\u2019s\nrunning emulators of <strong>retro computers and video game\nconsoles<\/strong> and will have some of the real hardware too. &nbsp;He\u2019ll\nhave video games, consoles, and computers from the 70\u2019s, 80\u2019s, 90\u2019s and 2000\u2019s.\n&nbsp;Ben will bring multiple consoles and computers and about two or three\ngames or programs each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nyou would like to know more about Rob\u2019s band organ, the Wayne Public Library\u2019s\nknitting machine, or Ben\u2019s retro games and computers, please reply to this\nemail!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2019\/05\/makerfaire-2019-banner-1024x427.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11599\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark your calendar for May 18, 2019 for the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/\">Wayne County\nMini Maker Faire<\/a>!<\/strong>&nbsp; It\u2019s our third year and we have an\nexciting variety of makers.&nbsp; It\u2019s an indoor\/outdoor event with a festival\ntheme.&nbsp; There is something for everyone!&nbsp; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/waynecounty.makerfaire.com\/makers-exhibits\/\">Click here for a list of makers<\/a><\/strong> from\npast years and some coming to this year\u2019s faire, too.&nbsp; It\u2019s a truly\nunforgettable experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until next week,\n\nTom\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone, The Wayne County Mini Maker Faire is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker Movement. &nbsp;It\u2019s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning.&nbsp; Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers.
