{"id":1250,"date":"2014-06-20T16:17:28","date_gmt":"2014-06-20T20:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=1250"},"modified":"2014-06-20T16:17:28","modified_gmt":"2014-06-20T20:17:28","slug":"printer-problems-large-parts-and-the-extruder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2014\/06\/20\/printer-problems-large-parts-and-the-extruder\/","title":{"rendered":"Printer problems, large parts, and the extruder!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Even in the middle of summer, exciting things are happening at the Wayne College Makerspace.\u00a0 At one point we had all three printers running, until I broke one of them (twice!).<\/p>\n<p>Maureen\u2019s husband learned that PhotoShop can be used to create 3D objects from photos.\u00a0 Normally, PhotoShop is a 2D program that allows one to edit digital photos and the like.\u00a0 He took a photo of a fireman, converted it to 3D, then printed the object on his company\u2019s StrataSys printer (a high-end 3D printer).\u00a0 We printed the fireman with our own printers with decent results.\u00a0 Note that the roughness of the print is from the PhotoShop conversion, not as much the printers themselves.\u00a0 Still, very impressive!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_20140620_153828.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1254 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_20140620_153828-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20140620_153828\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also experimented with two-color printing by pausing the print mid-way, switching to a different color filament (by unloading one color and loading another), then resuming the print.\u00a0 The technique worked perfectly!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_19700207_140735.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1258\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_19700207_140735-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700207_140735\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do you remember the adage \u201chaste makes waste\u201d?\u00a0 Well, I rushed a print job on our portable printer and accidentally loaded the wrong type of plastic (I used PLA instead of the recommended ABS).\u00a0 The result is that the plastic was poorly melted and jammed in the printer.\u00a0 Dusty performed surgery on our printer to clean-up the mess:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_20140617_145653.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1266\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_20140617_145653-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20140617_145653\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dusty is busy printing more objects for the automatic part rinser for the Chemistry Lab.\u00a0 This will save the Lab at least $400, not to mention the time it saves manually rinsing parts.\u00a0 His design is quite large; it will take almost 100 hours of printing time to build it.\u00a0 Here is one part that took 12 hours this week to print.\u00a0 We will keep you posted of the project\u2019s progress!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_20140616_084358.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1270\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/IMG_20140616_084358-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20140616_084358\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With other printer woes, our original printer has the occasional habit of shifting the print head 1\/2&#8243;
