Those needing help via 3D printing can turn to the Google Sheet to\nfind local individuals with 3D printers and the appropriate design experience\nto help with their needed projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/womenin3dprinting.com\/covid-19-3d-printing-responses\/\">Women in\n3D Printing<\/a> has been gathering direct links to initiatives emerging around\nthe world. Various projects are linked, including designs, community-based\nprojects, ongoing conversation forums, challenges, and more.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fabbaloo.com\/blog\/2020\/3\/18\/3d-printing-against-coronavirus-who-and-how-to-help\">See\nhow other 3D printing companies are stepping to fight COVID19<\/a> and <strong>how you can be involved<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/BlckSmShopOrigSite-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12743\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidronhistoricalsociety.org\/sonnenberg-village\">Floyd R.\nSaurer Blacksmith Shop<\/a> is among the original eight historic buildings\ndonated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidronhistoricalsociety.org\/sonnenberg-village\">Kidron Historical\nSociety<\/a>.&nbsp; <strong>The shop was built in 1906<\/strong>.\n&nbsp;John F. Moser bought the building in 1912 and added a buggy shop.\n&nbsp;He eventually hired Floyd R. Saurer to work as an apprentice and Saurer\nsoon after bought the business and building from Moser. Floyd Saurer continued\nto own and operate the blacksmith shop until closing its doors in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shop was left undisturbed exactly as Floyd Saurer left\nit when he closed the doors. &nbsp;Volunteers spent almost two years <strong>tagging, cleaning, and cataloging all the items in the\nshop<\/strong> for storage until the blacksmith shop could be moved.&nbsp;\nThen work began to reinstall all the tools and equipment in the Blacksmith Shop\njust as it was when Floyd Saurer closed the doors in 1967.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/awesome-barnes-antique-cast-iron-foot_1_2da53efa63b7f5c068b430094a11922b-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12747\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these items was a <strong>pedal\nbased metal lathe<\/strong>.&nbsp; Over the years, several of the gears were\ndamaged, missing teeth, etc.&nbsp; Machinist Rick and blacksmith Walt, both\nvolunteers of KCHS took an interest in restoring the lathe to a \u201cshowable\u201d\nworking condition.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/IMG_19700115_114228-765x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12751\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"849\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/gears-on-lathe.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/gears-on-lathe.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/gears-on-lathe.jpg?resize=283,300 283w, https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/gears-on-lathe.jpg?resize=768,815 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2020\/03\/gears-on-lathe.jpg?resize=425,451 425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They took measurements of the damaged gears, then used a <a href=\"https:\/\/geargenerator.com\/\">free online gear generator<\/a> to create a 2D\nvector image with the correct number of teeth, tooth pitch, etc. &nbsp;This\nlooks like a pencil drawing of the gear.&nbsp; This flat image was imported\ninto a CAD program which easily converted it to a <strong>three\ndimensional actual gear shape<\/strong> by adding \u201cthickness\u201d to the flat\nimage, then saved in STL format compatible with 3D printing. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our trusty Makerbot Replicator produced three different\ngears that needed replaced on the lathe.&nbsp; Rick &amp; Walt confirmed that\nthey <strong>fit perfectly on the machine<\/strong>!&nbsp;\nThese were made with PLA plastic, not a strong material for this type of\nuse.&nbsp; The final step is printing gears with harder material such as nylon\nto withstand the force of operating the lathe for demonstration purposes.&nbsp;\nGood job, Rick &amp;
