Hello everyone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fall semester here at The University of Akron Wayne College has been amazing.  We celebrated 50 years of providing higher education opportunities in the Wayne County and surrounding region, including a commemorative gift created in the 3D Lab!  This involved Student Celebration Days and the 30th year of the popular Poetry, Prose, and Acoustical Jam Community Concert.  Click here<\/a> for information about Wayne College\u2019s beginnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robot Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This semester is also our favorite time for student engineers who build interesting robots!  In the Tools for Engineering class, students learn free hand, engineering, CAD drawing, computer programming, computer application software, as well as an introduction to engineering economics.  This semester\u2019s robot design challenges include robots following waypoints along a path, ball flinging robots, weight pull and weight toss robots, a stair climbing challenge, and a sumo-style \u201cbattle bots\u201d tournament to push robots outside of the playfield.  Some of these robots use parts created in the 3D Lab.  It\u2019s always interesting to see students\u2019 imaginative designs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Painting the Neighborhood Colorful<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elliott Liggett is a frequent Maker Faire Wayne County participant.  He usually demonstrates electronics projects, such as machines that detect cosmic muon rays and a chamber that detects subatomic particles.  Little did we know that Elliott is also into painting!  He was inspired by colorful Mardi Gras style paintings during work trips to New Orleans and California, notably Blue Dog Paintings by Georgo Rodrigue<\/a>.  Elliott drew a grid of boxes on an 8-1\/2×11 sheet of paper, then painted the contents of each small box onto a similar grid drawn onto a large surface, such as the side of a building.  His neighbor was quite happy to share his fence for the project!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the paintings are much larger than the 8-1\/2×11 masters, Elliott added extra detail to his renditions such as sharper facial figures.  His paintings are a beautiful and colorful way to brighten-up the neighborhood!  If you want to see Elliott\u2019s paintings, take a drive past Quinby Avenue in Wooster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reusable banners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community member Rebecca visited the 3D Lab to create a banner for an upcoming Bible Camp.  The banner needed be to weather proof, although our poster printer only makes indoor banners.  To get around this problem, she purchased a predesigned vinyl banner from a professional source that included all of the artwork except the event\u2019s date & time.  We then used the 3D Lab\u2019s vinyl cutter to create adhesive lettering for the date & time.  This was then \u201cstuck\u201d to the banner.  This way, they can reuse the banner for future Bible Camp years and replace the date with different vinyl\u2019s stickers.  It turned out beautifully!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
