{"id":2218,"date":"2015-01-09T15:46:14","date_gmt":"2015-01-09T19:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=2218"},"modified":"2015-01-09T15:49:08","modified_gmt":"2015-01-09T19:49:08","slug":"2218","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/01\/09\/2218\/","title":{"rendered":"T-shirts, lasers, and our first video!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>The Spring 2015 semester begins next week.\u00a0 The 3D Lab is ready for another exciting semester.\u00a0 As with last January, our engineering students will design model rockets, some using 3D printed parts.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s rockets were quite creative, so we are excited to see how the printers and vinyl cutter will be used this year.<\/p>\n<p>A big announcement is the receipt of a generous grant from The Romich Foundation for a laser engraver!\u00a0 These incredibly diverse machines are used for engraving\/etching designs onto wood, metal, plastic, even onto laptops, leather, foam, etc.\u00a0 The laser also cuts out shapes from wood, plastic, and other \u201csoft\u201d material.\u00a0 The possibilities are endless for what they can do.<\/p>\n<p>To start with, the R\/C airplane club will use the laser engraver to cut airplane wings, bodies, and precise parts from foam board.\u00a0 The engineering students can cut-out custom fins from balsa wood and more.\u00a0 We hope to create engraved promotional materials, name tags, and materials to benefit the local community and other schools.\u00a0 Stay tuned as we begin this exciting adventure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/helix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2222\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/helix-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"helix\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Please check-out the following page of the many things that can be made &amp; customized with a laser engraver:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epiloglaser.com\/resources\/sample-club.htm\">https:\/\/www.epiloglaser.com\/resources\/sample-club.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you have anything that you would like engraved, please stop-by!\u00a0 Using the engraver is as easy as \u201cprinting\u201d from Microsoft Word.\u00a0 We should have the engraver installed and ready for use in a month or two.\u00a0 We also have a wide variety of materials that you and your students can engrave onto at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>The Friday before Christmas break, kids from the Orrville Boys &amp; Girls Club came to the 3D Lab to create t-shirts using their own designs made on the vinyl cutter.\u00a0 We have a special \u201cheat transfer\u201d vinyl that, in conjunction with a heat press, hot presses the vinyl onto t-shirts at high temperature.\u00a0 The results were amazing and the process was fairly simple to do.\u00a0 Kids made designs with solid-color vinyl, glitter vinyl, and a special \u201cchrome\u201d vinyl with impressive results.\u00a0 The event was fun and the kids went home with their own custom-made shirts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/IMG_19700115_180753.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2234\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/IMG_19700115_180753-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700115_180753\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you or your department needs custom-made t-shirts, bring-in some shirts!\u00a0 We will provide the vinyl and help with creating your designs.\u00a0 We can work with 100% cotton, 100% polyester, and 50\/50 blend.<\/p>\n<p>Last semester, Akron campus filmed a Wayne College commercial that mentioned our 3D printer initiative.\u00a0 You can view the video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tB2y71UXNXg&amp;feature=youtu.be\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Betty Rogge, Senior Lecturer of Elementary Education at Wayne, has graciously offered to create a promotional video of our 3D Lab!\u00a0 Morgan wrote the script and Dusty did the acting (in the style of \u201cThe Crocodile Hunter\u201d).\u00a0 Betty directed and is now arranging and producing the final video.\u00a0 It will introduce the lab and the various equipment that students have access to.\u00a0 It\u2019s informative and funny, so stay tuned for its release!<\/p>\n<p>Last, check-out our latest print from our PLA printer, a Maker Faire Robot.\u00a0 This little guy was designed to be \u201cprint-in-place\u201d, meaning that the robot is a fully articulating object printed as one piece with no assembly.\u00a0 It helps one understand how to design 3D objects with 3D printing in-mind.\u00a0 It is a marvelous engineering accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/maker-faire-robots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2238\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/maker-faire-robots-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"maker faire robots\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/3d-printing-news.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-838\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2014\/06\/3d-printing-news-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"3d-printing-news\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See how 5th graders use 3D printing to create a prosthetic leg for \u201cStumpy\u201d the turtle.\u00a0 It\u2019s a heart warming story:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/fifth-graders-3d-print-stumpy-turtle\/35419\">http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/fifth-graders-3d-print-stumpy-turtle\/35419<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We learned a new technique to bind plastic parts together without glue.\u00a0 It\u2019s called \u201cfriction welding\u201d where we use our Dremel tool to spin filament at high speed.\u00a0 This melts when applied to plastic junctions.\u00a0 The bond is amazingly strong, almost like welding metal!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/12\/30\/3d-printing-technique-friction-welding\">http:\/\/hackaday.com\/2014\/12\/30\/3d-printing-technique-friction-welding<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Until next week,<\/p>\n<p>Tom<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone, The Spring 2015 semester begins next week.\u00a0 The 3D Lab is ready for another exciting semester.\u00a0 As with last January, our engineering students will design model rockets, some using 3D printed parts.\u00a0 Last year\u2019s rockets were quite creative, so we are excited to see how the printers and vinyl cutter will be used this year.
