{"id":2438,"date":"2015-02-13T17:35:36","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T21:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=2438"},"modified":"2015-02-13T17:35:36","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T21:35:36","slug":"rc-airplanes-ailing-printers-community-presentations-and-a-monkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/02\/13\/rc-airplanes-ailing-printers-community-presentations-and-a-monkey\/","title":{"rendered":"R\/C airplanes, ailing printers, community presentations, and a monkey!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Hello everyone,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">After taking vacation for a week in the sunny state of Florida, I wondered (and even worried) about how things were going at the Wayne College 3D Lab.\u00a0 It seems that the room generates a life of its own; there are always a smattering of students working on various projects and hanging out together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Chris (a Wayne College student who also works in the Technical Support Department) is president of the R\/C airplane club, now in its second semester.\u00a0 This past Monday, a sizable group of students and community members flew almost two dozen radio controlled airplanes in the gym.\u00a0 Part of the success of this club is from the 3D Lab, allowing students to create functional parts for their planes.\u00a0 They\u2019ve made engine mounts, wheels, landing skis, wings, propellers, and more.\u00a0 The culmination of this club is the creation of a large plane with a five-foot wingspan!\u00a0 Nathan is busy preparing it for its first flight hopefully next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020047.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2462\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020047-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"P1020047\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2442\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020052-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"P1020052\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/100_5707.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2454\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/100_5707-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"100_5707\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">During the first year of operating the 3D Lab, we realized that 3D printers require constant maintenance just as copier machines and laser printers do.\u00a0 There is always something to fix, calibrate, and optimize.\u00a0 Thankfully, most of our 3D printers have annual service plans which cover the cost of replacement parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Our first 3D printer (generously provided by the Laura B. Frick Charitable Trust) has been a solid performer.\u00a0 Last week, after 20 minutes into a print job, the print bed would not move up\/down properly which resulted in a failed print and gobs of melted plastic everywhere.\u00a0 Dusty took the time to tear the printer apart to discover stray plastic lodged in the z-axis rod.\u00a0 Our engineers have no problem with getting to the heart of difficult projects!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020053.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2446\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020053-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"P1020053\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">The week before last, we were invited to present 3D printing and careers in engineering to the Wayne County Business Referral Group (courtesy of Kevin Engle).\u00a0 The members of the WCBRG are comprised of business people whose companies conduct business in Wayne County. \u00a0Members join together to help one-another succeed in business through the exchange of qualified business referrals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Morgan and I brought the portable printer and was well received as their monthly speaker.\u00a0 The question and answer session was quite lengthy as folks were interested in the technology.\u00a0 Most have heard about 3D printing but few have seen it in-action.\u00a0 Morgan and I had a fantastic time with the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020029.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2458\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020029-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"P1020029\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Those of us \u201cmakers\u201d in the 3D Lab are always up for a challenge.\u00a0 One of our instructors found a figurine on <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\">www.thingiverse.com<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\"> and asked if we could print it for her husband.\u00a0 The result was a 21-piece figurine of a flying monkey from the Wizard of Oz.\u00a0 We used our best printer for the job, the Makerbot Replicator 5th Generation provided by the Romich Foundation.\u00a0 It took 12 hours to print all of the parts, then a student and Theresa Rabbitts\u2019 son assembled them into a fully articulating figure.\u00a0 Everyone helps each other in the 3D Lab, turning DIY projects (do it yourself) into DIT (do it together).\u00a0 This is a nature of a true makerspace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020054.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2450\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/02\/P1020054-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"P1020054\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/3d-printing-news.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2426\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/01\/3d-printing-news-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"3d-printing-news\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Did you know that the International Space Station has a 3D printer that works in zero-gravity?\u00a0 See how NASA \u201ce-mailed\u201d a ratcheting wrench to the ISS that was printed in space:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/news\/archive\/2014-12\/19\/3d-printed-space-wrench\">http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/news\/archive\/2014-12\/19\/3d-printed-space-wrench<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">See how the University of Utah used 3D printing to create a prosthetic ear for a four-year-old to help with fitting in with classmate during his first year of kindergarten:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"http:\/\/3dprint.com\/42341\/utah-3d-printed-ear-4-year-old\">http:\/\/3dprint.com\/42341\/utah-3d-printed-ear-4-year-old<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned for more happenings in the 3D Lab next week!<\/p>\n<p>Tom<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone, After taking vacation for a week in the sunny state of Florida, I wondered (and even worried) about how things were going at the Wayne College 3D Lab.\u00a0 It seems that the room generates a life of its own; there are always a smattering of students working on various projects and hanging out together.
