{"id":2550,"date":"2015-03-06T17:01:39","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T21:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=2550"},"modified":"2015-03-06T17:01:39","modified_gmt":"2015-03-06T21:01:39","slug":"dual-stage-rockets-tables-of-elements-decals-and-a-wonderful-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/03\/06\/dual-stage-rockets-tables-of-elements-decals-and-a-wonderful-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"Dual-stage rockets, tables of elements decals, and a wonderful visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Hello everyone,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Now into the halfway mark of the semester, activity is picking up in the 3D Lab for student projects.\u00a0 The Dynamics class builds model rockets this semester based on custom designs, aerodynamic studies, and various fabrication methods (including 3D printing).\u00a0 We are thankful that all three printers are working well; they have been running simultaneously for most of the week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">One of our students is building a two-stage rocket, creating the design in CAD and building it with our first 3D printer provided by the Laura B. Frick Charitable Trust.\u00a0 It is a modular design with stacking sets of fins to support each engine.\u00a0 The student created interlocking tabs to hold the stages together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/03\/IMG_20150303_075805.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2566\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/03\/IMG_20150303_075805-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150303_075805\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/03\/IMG_20150303_075841.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2554\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/03\/IMG_20150303_075841-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150303_075841\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Notice the rough plastic on the bottom of the green rocket?\u00a0 This is \u201csupport material\u201d that the printer creates to reach areas that hang in mid-air.\u00a0 This is important as the printer creates objects from the ground-up.\u00a0 After printing, this material snaps off then is placed in plastic bins for recycling into new filament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Morgan uses the vinyl cutter extensively to create window decals for the Periodic Table of Elements.\u00a0 This means well over 110 decals that will adorn the Chemistry Lab.\u00a0 She is our expert with vinyl cutting and assists anyone needing this work done.\u00a0 Please stop-by the lab if you have a project for her!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/03\/P1020046.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2562\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/03\/P1020046-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"P1020046\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">On Thursday, we had a wonderful visit with representatives from the Laura B.
