boards, Christmas tree stands, Dalton Middle School, and a field trip!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Hello everyone,<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now into the final month of the semester, our engineering students are currently building and performing physics calculations on their model rockets.\u00a0 Some student 3D print nosecones and rocket fins\/bodies, others choose different fabrication methods.\u00a0 Because the three printers are in high demand, we now have reservation boards next to each printer to queue student use.\u00a0 Thankfully all three printers are working well during this \u201ccrunch time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Last Friday, eight young adults from the Orrville Boys and Girls Club visited Wayne College to learn more about 3D printing, CAD design, and other creative pursuits.\u00a0 Using donated square wooden plaques, I engraved a checkboard pattern using an offsite laser engraver.\u00a0 The kids applied wooden tiles in various colors.\u00a0 They then used Solidworks to design their own checker pieces in CAD.\u00a0 Needless to say, the kids had a blast and are excited to 3D print their checker pieces next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/04\/P1020127.jpg\"><img style=\"line-height: 1.5\">A couple of weeks ago, one of our teachers brought parts to a Christmas tree stand.\u00a0 Long bolts screw into the stand with a plastic cap on each bolt that holds the trunk in-place.\u00a0 These caps sometimes crack from the pressure.\u00a0 Nathan designed a replacement cap in Creo that secures to the bolt.\u00a0 So replacement caps are now as easy as hitting \u201cPrint\u201d on the computer.\u00a0 Thanks, Nathan!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/04\/P1020158.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">We made a connection with Dalton Middle School a few weeks ago (courtesy of Barry Romich) where eighth grade students brainstorm inventions for a \u201cShark Tank\u201d type of competition.\u00a0 Students pitched their ideas and built dioramas to visually demonstrate its design.\u00a0 This past Tuesday, we visited the school to talk about 3D printing and careers in engineering.\u00a0 The students were clearly interested in the technology as most had not seen a 3D printer in action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a printed a part for one of their Shark Tank designs, a simple clip that attaches a pipe to a cabinet door.\u00a0 The students and teacher were quite impressed!<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\">On April 17th, we are considering a second trip to the &#8220;<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"http:\/\/engineering.case.edu\/thinkbox\/\">thinkbox&#8221; facility at Case Western Reserve<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">.\u00a0 A number of this semester\u2019s student and 3D Lab staff had not seen the facility, which contain high-end 3D printers, laser engravers, wood and metal shops, circuit board makers, electronics stations, and much more.\u00a0 If there is enough time, the group may stop at <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"http:\/\/mapsairmuseum.org\/\">MAPS<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\"> on the way back to Wayne, to tour the airplane museum and perform more 3D scanning for the jet nosecone project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.case.edu\/thinkbox\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2906 \"
