{"id":3306,"date":"2015-05-08T10:34:56","date_gmt":"2015-05-08T14:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=3306"},"modified":"2015-05-08T10:34:56","modified_gmt":"2015-05-08T14:34:56","slug":"rockets-snakebots-and-window-clips-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/05\/08\/rockets-snakebots-and-window-clips-revisited\/","title":{"rendered":"Rockets, snakebots, and window clips revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>With the spring semester officially ending this Saturday, activity is temporarily winding down in the 3D Lab.\u00a0 We have a lot planned for this summer\u2019s work.\u00a0 The laser engraver will be fully installed as well as a new resin printer and up to three more 3D printers to setup and learn.\u00a0 These will better handle the printing demand during the upcoming fall semester.\u00a0 With our summer community outreach, we plan to present at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.units.miamioh.edu\/uit\/node\/1110\">OHECC conference<\/a> at Miami University about our experiences in building a makerspace.\u00a0 And starting soon is a 10-week summer camp that teaches kids from the Orrville Boys and Girls Club how to build R\/C airplanes using digital fabrication techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The semester finished with a bang, quite literally.\u00a0 Over the past several weeks, the 3D Lab hosted seniors from Kingsway Christian School.\u00a0 Nathan taught them CAD design using the free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sketchup.com\/products\/sketchup-make\">SketchUp Make<\/a> software, designing the fins, body tubes, and nosecones for model rockets.\u00a0 Last Friday, these students finished the designs and launched their creations!\u00a0 Thanks to Nathan\u2019s calculations, they flew straight up, though we had trouble with parachute deployment.\u00a0 Thankfully all rockets were retrieved in (mostly) one piece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/IMG_20150423_103849.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3270\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/IMG_20150423_103849-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150423_103849\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nathan teaching CAD design<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/IMG_20150501_102503.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3274\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/IMG_20150501_102503-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150501_102503\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Creating parachutes and final assembly<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/launch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3278\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/launch-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"launch\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lighting the fuse<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/the-gang.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3282\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/05\/the-gang-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"the gang\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Successful launch day!<\/p>\n<p>A University of Akron main campus student is pursuing a robotics project.\u00a0 His invention is a \u201csnake bot\u201d that uses pneumatics for mobility by forming\/deforming a frame-like, jointed shape.\u00a0 The 3D Lab assisted his project by 3D printing the ball joint system that he designed in CAD.\u00a0 The basic robot works;
