{"id":4546,"date":"2015-09-04T11:50:34","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T15:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=4546"},"modified":"2015-09-04T11:50:34","modified_gmt":"2015-09-04T15:50:34","slug":"snake-bot-parts-huge-rc-planes-and-a-visit-by-heartland-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/09\/04\/snake-bot-parts-huge-rc-planes-and-a-visit-by-heartland-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Snake bot parts, huge R\/C planes, and a visit by Heartland Point"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>With the first week of the Fall semester at its end, the 3D Lab proves a busy place for students and community members.\u00a0 We are interested to see what the engineering classes will cook-up in the lab for projects.\u00a0 The lab is also used as a hang-out place for students to socialize, do homework, and help each other create cool things with the equipment.\u00a0 The Wayne College R\/C Flight Club had their first meeting there on Monday evening; be sure to stop by the next Monday at 6:00 if you are interested in joining!<\/p>\n<p>As introduced in a previous post, did you know that the 3D Lab is involved with a joint research project with the University of Chile?\u00a0 Jeff Davis and Dr. Dan Deckler from the University of Akron and Juan Cristobal Zagal from the University of Chile are building a \u201csnakebot\u201d that can squeeze itself into the gaps, crevices, and cracks of piles of rubble. A robot that can shift its actual size, expanding when it needs to, and constricting when things get tight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/3dp_OctaWorm_controller-e1439415073838.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4550\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/3dp_OctaWorm_controller-e1439415073838-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"3dp_OctaWorm_controller-e1439415073838\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Parts of this OctaWorm require tight tolerances, finer than what traditional 3D printers can accomplish.\u00a0 Thanks to the Romich Foundation, we produced robot parts with our resin 3D printer.\u00a0 The results were night and day.\u00a0 The cost of producing resin parts is 6-8 more expensive than plastic based 3D printing, but definitely worth the cost for certain scenarios.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150617_091842.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4554\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150617_091842-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150617_091842\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Robot parts printed on a mesh of \u201csupports\u201d which keeps them from moving around during printing<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150618_162756.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4558\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150618_162756-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150618_162756\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Final robot parts with supports removed<\/p>\n<p>The 3D Lab is proud to be involved with this project.\u00a0 We\u2019ll keep you posted as we learn more of the OctaWorm\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the R\/C Flight Club, members are already full-tilt designing and building new planes.\u00a0 The laser engraver is typically used to cut the foam board wings and bodies while motor mounts and aileron linkages are 3D printed.<\/p>\n<p>Chris (president of the club) is learning how to use SolidWorks to create plane designs.\u00a0 The program has a \u201cmetal folding feature\u201d that allows flat designs to be folded and shaped in 3D, similar to what a metal bending machine would do during actual fabrication.\u00a0 He is getting quite good at it with this glider that he invented:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150825_121451.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4562\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150825_121451-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150825_121451\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nathan has built his largest R\/C airplane yet, a dual propellor monstrosity an that actually lift itself vertically and hover.\u00a0 Our laser engraver is not large enough to cut the wings and body parts that he needed, so Nathan resorted to manual cutting methods (craft knife and\/or hot knife).\u00a0 The plane is amazing and flies quite well for its size!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150831_125830.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4566\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150831_125830-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150831_125830\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ready to fly<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150831_125859.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4570\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150831_125859-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150831_125859\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Huge propellers and 3D printed motor mount<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150831_125904.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4574\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150831_125904-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150831_125904\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3D printed linkages<\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, representatives from Heartland Point in Orrville visited the lab to discuss future collaborative works.\u00a0 Our former marketing person was there (Cindy Summers);
