{"id":4594,"date":"2015-09-15T10:34:09","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T14:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=4594"},"modified":"2015-09-15T10:34:09","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T14:34:09","slug":"flight-camp-recap-synthetic-organ-stress-testing-and-laser-cut-award-medals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/09\/15\/flight-camp-recap-synthetic-organ-stress-testing-and-laser-cut-award-medals\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight Camp recap, synthetic organ stress testing, and laser-cut award medals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Exciting things are preparing to happen in the 3D Lab.\u00a0 Now into the third week of the semester, engineering students will soon begin robotic designs that will use 3D printing for some of its parts.\u00a0 These robots have specific tasks to perform such as throwing a weighted ball a calculated distance, locating and capturing an object in a confined area, and more.\u00a0 The creative robotic designs never cease to amaze us.<\/p>\n<p>Later this week, we will receive two additions to the 3D Lab, matching Taz 5 3D printers!\u00a0 These highly rated machines were provided by the Carl E. Congdon, Jr. and Susanna Congdon McIntyre Memorial Fund, a component of the Wayne County Community Foundation.\u00a0 The printers will create 150% larger objects than our other printers, using exotic materials such as rubber, nylon, t-glase, HIPS plastic, and stone- &amp; wood-infused plastic.\u00a0 Needless to say, we are quite excited!\u00a0 More news as we dig into these marvels next week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/Lulzbot_taz5_3d_printer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4598\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/Lulzbot_taz5_3d_printer-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lulzbot_taz5_3d_printer\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned earlier this year, the summer flight camp with the Orrville Area Boys and Girls Club was a wonderful success.\u00a0 We posted its progress throughout the summer; please read previous blog entries <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\">here<\/a> for details.\u00a0 Instructor Chris made a nice video to recap the activity, a testament to the fun time the kids had while learning makerspace technology to build the planes.\u00a0 Please click the picture below to watch the video.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/e1198qVnAKU\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4602\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/flight-club-recap-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"flight-club-recap\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in the 3D Lab, a UA graduate student is building a device that will test the structural integrity of synthetic organ material, such as a synthetic heart.\u00a0 The device stretches the material in four directions at the same time, yet individually controllable.\u00a0 His invention uses a combination of ABS and PLA plastic.\u00a0 Detailed parts (such as threaded sockets) were created with the high resolution resin printer. \u00a0We are quite impressed with his design and the initial prototype seems to work well!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150826_124629.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4606\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/09\/IMG_20150826_124629-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150826_124629\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We continue to be amazed with projects that students and staff dream-up with the laser cutter.\u00a0 Staff member Theresa wanted to create award medals for the local live drama theater.\u00a0 Thanks to generous donations from P.
