{"id":4839,"date":"2015-10-22T10:50:28","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T14:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=4839"},"modified":"2015-10-22T10:50:28","modified_gmt":"2015-10-22T14:50:28","slug":"helicopters-holsters-and-the-massilon-amateur-radio-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/10\/22\/helicopters-holsters-and-the-massilon-amateur-radio-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Helicopters, holsters, and the Massilon Amateur Radio Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Sorry for the missing blog entry last week, as yours truly was on vacation and needed a break!\u00a0 Now back to the job and refreshed, it\u2019s time to dig into the latest exciting things happening in the 3D Lab at The University of Akron Wayne College.<\/p>\n<p>With engineering classes in full-swing, the 3D printed weighted cubes worked well for the LEGO Mindstorms robots that tossed them.\u00a0 Now students are building robots to carry and drag heavy loads.\u00a0 3D printers are currently creating student designed sleds that their robots will pull.\u00a0 More about this activity in the next blog.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned last week, the 3D Lab offered a virtual demonstration of laser cutting and engraving to students of Dalton Middle School.\u00a0 The session was a wonderful success!\u00a0 Each student designed model helicopter parts with pencil &amp; paper which were scanned into the computer, traced with vector art software, then laser cut and engraved.\u00a0 \u00a0The results are shown below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/IMG_20151008_145939.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4843\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/IMG_20151008_145939-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151008_145939\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4847\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/image-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t visualize how these parts assemble into helicopters, then you are in good company; neither can I!\u00a0 But the instructor will reveal the final result when the helicopters are finished soon.\u00a0 The kids also made their own gravity helicopters out of cardboard and were visited by a real one landing in their schools yard a couple of weeks ago!<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, Nathan\u2019s involvement with the Armed Forces prompted him to try a new project with the laser engraver, a leather gun holster made from scratch.\u00a0 Upon reading the engraver\u2019s manual, we found that that the engraver fully supports engraving and cutting leather.\u00a0 This was especially helpful for cutting holes that are needed for stitching leather together.\u00a0 There were specific laser power and speed settings for leather, so with a little experiementing it worked perfectly!\u00a0 Suprisingly, the cutting process emitted a nasty odor that permeated the room.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/IMG_20151008_140452.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4851\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/IMG_20151008_140452-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151008_140452\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last step is wet forming the leather pieces into a mold around the firearm.\u00a0 We are interested to see how the final result will look.\u00a0 Good job, Nathan!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/IMG_20151008_142307.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4855\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/10\/IMG_20151008_142307-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151008_142307\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, we took the portable 3D printer (provided by the Romich Foundation) to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w8np.org\/\">Massillon Amateur Radio Club<\/a> for a presentation on 3D printing and careers in engineering.\u00a0 Since 1927, the Club has been a diverse radio hobbyist club that is currently over 80 members strong.
