{"id":4891,"date":"2015-11-02T13:41:13","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T17:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=4891"},"modified":"2015-11-02T13:41:19","modified_gmt":"2015-11-02T17:41:19","slug":"flashlights-instrument-panels-and-the-harvest-bash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/11\/02\/flashlights-instrument-panels-and-the-harvest-bash\/","title":{"rendered":"Flashlights, instrument panels, and the Harvest Bash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>With the semester finishing its ninth week of classes, the 3D Lab is as busy as ever.\u00a0 Our two newest printers (Lulzbot Taz 5 printers provided by the Wayne County Community Foundation) have proven to be workhorses, running flawlessly practically all day, every day.\u00a0 Each day brings new activities with student assignments, community projects, club involvement, mentoring, and more.<\/p>\n<p>We are also thankful for our older printers (two Makerbot and one Affinia brand printers provided by the Romich Foundation and Laura B. Frick Charitable Trust).\u00a0 Makerbot (based in Brooklyn, New York) is currently the most established consumer 3D printing company.\u00a0 They offer service plans that benefit our printers.\u00a0 Our first printer is currently at their repair shop and our other printer receives replaced extruder heads, as they fail, at no cost.\u00a0 Having extra printers available during failures keeps our labs available to students.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this semester, engineering students were busy designing flashlight bodies and related parts using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solidworks.com\/\">Solidworks<\/a>, a high-end CAD program.\u00a0 Now they are printing full-size versions of them.\u00a0 The designs look like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151030_201434.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4895\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151030_201434-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151030_201434\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the designs look excellent on-screen, they pose a challenge for 3D printing.\u00a0 Because printing is performed from the ground up, any overhangs need temporary posts under them for support.\u00a0 These supports drastically increase print time and filament consumption. \u00a0You can see the overhang under the lip in the flashlight case, and how support material is printed to support it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151021_212336.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4899\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151021_212336-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151021_212336\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students learn to change how something is designed so that it 3D prints as efficiently and quickly as possible.\u00a0 This redesigning not only saves time and money, but allows things to be created that wasn\u2019t possible with traditional manufacturing methods.\u00a0 For example, see how this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:331035\">articulating robot<\/a> can be 3D printed as one piece, without needing to be assembled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/Paris_Maker_Faire_Robot_le_FabShop_07_preview_featured.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4903\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/Paris_Maker_Faire_Robot_le_FabShop_07_preview_featured-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Paris_Maker_Faire_Robot_le_FabShop_07_preview_featured\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over the past few weeks, a community member wanted to design replacement instrument panel covers for fire trucks.\u00a0 After talking through ideas with personnel and students in the 3D, we decided to laser cut the panels from clear acrylic.\u00a0 These panels would be overlays for changeable paper labels.\u00a0 They used free vector art software from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\">LibreOffice<\/a> which was imported into Corel DRAW in the 3D Lab.\u00a0 The laser cutter cut the designs beautifully while the paper overlays were color printed with an inkjet printer.\u00a0 The panel covers turned out beautifully!<\/p>\n<p>We encourage visitors to learn the equipment and create things themselves; It had its start from a group of concerned parents that worked together to prevent substance abuse.\u00a0 We took the 3D printer to a Harvest Bash event held at St. Mary\u2019s Catholic Church in Wooster.\u00a0 Hundreds of children, parents, and young adults attended the event.\u00a0 Our 3D printer was a bit hit, as usual.\u00a0 Kids of all ages and adults alike were fascinated with the technology and excited to know about the availability of 3D Lab at Wayne College.\u00a0 We hope that new visitors will come to the lab to learn a new skill, hobby, or even future career!\u00a0 Thanks, Nonya, for inviting us!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151028_052044-blurred.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4919\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151028_052044-blurred-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151028_052044 blurred\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are thankful to P.
