Graham Dunn, and others.\u00a0 It is your support that makes the 3D Lab a success and provides a collaborative, free resource to our community.\u00a0 Your continued support makes this service possible.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/community-support\/\">Please visit this link for a complete list of supporters<\/a>.\u00a0 Thank you!<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of community members, I am always surprised and impressed with the ideas from our visitors.\u00a0 Lately, Norm had the idea of adapting a smartphone to work as a spotting scope.\u00a0 Normally, these are small, portable telescopes with added optics to present an erect image, optimized for the observation of terrestrial objects.\u00a0 They are used for birdwatching and other naturalist activities, for hunting, verifying a marksman&#8217;s shots, surveillance, and for any other application that requires more magnification than a pair of binoculars.\u00a0 Norm\u2019s design looks like this, designed with the free, excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.123dapp.com\/design\">AutoDesk 123D Design<\/a> CAD software:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/spotting-scope-adapter-for-iPod.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4935\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/spotting-scope-adapter-for-iPod-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"spotting scope adapter for iPod\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the on-screen design work was completed, he printed prototypes on our newest 3D printers, the Taz 5 models provided by the Susanna Congdon McIntyre Memorial Fund.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151027_005009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4939\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151027_005009-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151027_005009\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a couple of design tweaks, the final version fit his phone perfectly!\u00a0 We are interested to know how the spotting scope works out-in-the-wild, so Norm will let us know in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151027_005021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4947\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151027_005021-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151027_005021\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While not directly related to the 3D Lab, the <a href=\"http:\/\/caserocketteam.org\/\">Case Western Rocket Team<\/a> held a \u201claunch day\u201d event in Marshallville last Saturday.\u00a0 They are like-minded undergraduates, Masters&#8217; students, PhD students, and alumni that participate in high-power rocketry competitions and other aerospace-related events both in the greater Cleveland area as well as elsewhere in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>On a blistery cold, windy day, over a dozen students launched their rockets in the middle of a recently harvested farmer\u2019s field.\u00a0 These are not rockets that you buy at Walmart;
