{"id":4987,"date":"2015-11-20T11:13:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-20T15:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=4987"},"modified":"2015-11-20T11:13:06","modified_gmt":"2015-11-20T15:13:06","slug":"baja-vehicle-battery-boxes-knee-braces-and-the-barnes-noble-maker-faire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/11\/20\/baja-vehicle-battery-boxes-knee-braces-and-the-barnes-noble-maker-faire\/","title":{"rendered":"Baja vehicle battery boxes, knee braces, and the Barnes &amp; Noble Maker Faire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 3D Lab is involved with exciting projects over the past several months.\u00a0 Engineering students can truly make their ideas and dreams possible with 3D printing, laser cutting, and other fabrication methods available in the lab.\u00a0 I frequently discover something new and interesting being made.<\/p>\n<p>We were honored to be visited by the University of Akron Zips Baja Team.\u00a0 This student- led team is challenged to design and fabricate an off-roading vehicle powered by a 10hp Briggs and Stratton engine. Competition entails static events such as cost report and face-to-face design evaluation judged by professional mechanical engineers, along with dynamic events such as acceleration, maneuverability, suspension, and a four-hour endurance race where teams complete as many laps as possible.\u00a0 Click <a href=\"http:\/\/zipsbaja.com\/vehicles\/\">here<\/a> to see UA\u2019s \u201cGreen Car\u201d and <a href=\"http:\/\/zipsbaja.com\/news\/\">here<\/a> to watch a race video (<a href=\"http:\/\/zipsbaja.com\/news\/\">Zips 2015 Midnight Mayhem<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The 3D Lab assisted the UA Baja Team by fabricating a battery box designed by their team.\u00a0 We printed two boxes and lids on our large-format Taz 5 3D printers (donated by the Wayne County Community Foundation) using heat-resistant HIPS plastic.\u00a0 The printers created impressively strong boxes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20150930_100548.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4991 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20150930_100548-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150930_100548\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After printing, we discovered that the boxes exhibited horizontal cracks.\u00a0 Because the Taz 5 are \u201copen face\u201d printers, the lab air cooled the hot plastic layers too quickly, not allowing layers to fully fuse together.\u00a0 Commercial 3D printers are often enclosed to retain\/maintain a consistent heated temperature during printing.\u00a0 We plan to build an inexpensive acrylic enclosure for one of these printers to allow printing of large objects without cracking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20150929_082602.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4995\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20150929_082602-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20150929_082602\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wayne College students in our engineering classes are churning out new inventions every couple of weeks.\u00a0 These are class assignments to accomplish particular tasks such as tossing a weighted cube, pulling a weight, climbing stairs, etc.\u00a0 Nathan has been hard at work designing a 3D printed knee brace.\u00a0 His design involves numerous interlocking parts (some spring loaded).\u00a0 Consumer based 3D printers sometimes do not produce dimensionally accurate parts, so physical shaving\/sanding\/cutting is needed to ensure things fit together:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151119_135253.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4999\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151119_135253-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151119_135253\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I arrived in my office a couple of mornings ago, I discovered the below finished brace on my desk.\u00a0 After several weeks of hard work, Nathan completed the initial build, a proof-of-concept leg brace that can be used for demonstration.\u00a0 It articulates quite well!\u00a0 Don\u2019t mind the Scotch tape. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151120_075010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5003\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151120_075010-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151120_075010\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, Barnes &amp;
