{"id":5131,"date":"2015-12-04T12:27:26","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T16:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=5131"},"modified":"2015-12-04T12:29:04","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T16:29:04","slug":"stair-climbing-robots-engraving-marble-and-a-visit-by-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2015\/12\/04\/stair-climbing-robots-engraving-marble-and-a-visit-by-the-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Stair climbing robots, engraving marble, and a visit by the community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>Much is happening in the 3D Lab, even with winter break and the holidays soon approaching.\u00a0 A particularly interesting project involves students building robots to climb steps.\u00a0 While a seemingly simple task among us humans, it poses a large challenge to our student engineers!<\/p>\n<p>The robots were built from LEGO Mindstorms parts which involves bricks, motors, sensors, and a large CPU brick that serves as the robot\u2019s brain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/100_1120.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5135\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/100_1120-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"100_1120\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most successful robot of the bunch<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/1120-new.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5139\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/1120-new-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"1120-new\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This clever robot \u201ctook the high road\u201d and descends instead of climbs<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/IMG_20151125_122947.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5143\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/IMG_20151125_122947-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151125_122947\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who needs steps when you can use a ramp?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/100_1123.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5147\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2015\/12\/100_1123-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"100_1123\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another clever design<\/p>\n<p>The step climbing competition went very well.\u00a0 While most robots did not complete the climb, one of them made it (with the help of a ramp made from LEGO pieces) and one of them almost made it by navigating a long route through the building, avoiding the stairs altogether.\u00a0 The long robot with many treads (first photo) was the successful climber and was developed by Mitchell Waugh and Taylor Black.\u00a0 The robot that &#8220;took the long way home&#8221; Smucker Company.\u00a0 This funding will allow our lab to grow in ways previously not possible and continue to provide a free, accessible service to students, hobbyists, inventors, local schools, and organizations throughout Wayne County.\u00a0 Thank you!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A family recently visited the lab, as some very young patrons were interested in making things.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to see how readily young adults understand concepts of vector art and 3D design as well as the process of laser engraving and 3D printing.\u00a0 They created their own designs using Corel DRAW, then laser engraved colorful metal notepads (courtesy of P. Graham Dunn).\u00a0 Another young patron CAD designed a key from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy on his home computer, then 3D printed a replica on our original 3D printer (donated by the Laura B.
