{"id":5355,"date":"2016-01-15T17:27:03","date_gmt":"2016-01-15T21:27:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/?p=5355"},"modified":"2016-01-15T17:27:03","modified_gmt":"2016-01-15T21:27:03","slug":"battle-bots-puzzle-box-and-tie-fighters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/2016\/01\/15\/battle-bots-puzzle-box-and-tie-fighters\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle bots, puzzle box, and TIE fighters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello everyone,<\/p>\n<p>The start of Spring semester begins next week.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been busy in the 3D Lab, preparing for another semester of interesting projects.\u00a0 We are replentishing our filament supply, calibrating 3D printers, and making progress with the Electronics Station.\u00a0 Engineering students build model rockets this semester, many of which are modeled in CAD software then 3D printed.\u00a0 Exciting times are coming up once again!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of engineering, last semester witnessed the annual Battle Bots Tournament.\u00a0 Students build robots using LEGO Mindstorms kits, the goal of which involves pushing and\/or disable the opponent\u2019s robot to fall over the arena\u2019s edge.\u00a0 It\u2019s always creative, entertaining, and generates plenty of laughs.<\/p>\n<p>Some robots sport plows, others are covered with armor, while another used an arm to flip the opposing robot once it neared the edge.\u00a0 The winner was a small, nimble robot with plenty of torque for pushing things around.\u00a0 Quite entertaining to watch!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_011539.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5359\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_011539-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700109_011539\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spinning appendages and flailing arms<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_012335.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5363\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_012335-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700109_012335\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wirelessly controlled robots<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_012450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5367\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_012450-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700109_012450\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Outlandish robots face-off<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_013422.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5371\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700109_013422-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700109_013422\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final match! (winning robot on right)<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to Scott Gold who organized the event and Dusty who referee\u2019d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the 3D printing arena, students create things purely from their imaginations.\u00a0 Nathan devised a clever \u201cpuzzle box\u201d that is impossible to open without knowing its special trick.\u00a0 While there are plenty of puzzle box designs on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\">www.thingiverse.com<\/a>, Nathan came-up with his own idea.\u00a0 The result is below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700102_002716.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5375\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700102_002716-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700102_002716\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This box is difficult to open! \u00a0The key to the design are loosely fitting, horizontal pins that shift from centrifugal force.\u00a0 When the box is closed (lid affixed), these internal pins push inward to latch the lid shut.\u00a0 The \u201ctrick\u201d is spinning the box like a top, which moves the pins away from the lid\u2019s internal lip.\u00a0 The only way to open the box is to spin it first!\u00a0 Holding the box at any angle always keeps some of the pins engaged with the lid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700102_002659.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5379\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700102_002659-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700102_002659\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the holidays drew near last month, a number of students used the 3D Lab to make gifts for friends &amp; family.\u00a0 For example, a student\u2019s girlfriend is an avid Star Wars fan.\u00a0 To celebrate the new movie, Caleb 3D printed a scale model of an Advanced TIE Fighter.\u00a0 Due to its complexity, the model was printed in various parts, then assembled.\u00a0 This minimized the need for printing temporary plastic to support overhangs and recesses.\u00a0 The model turned out beautifully, printed on our Taz 5 3D printers furnished by the Wayne County Community Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700108_212105.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5383\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uakron.edu\/waynec3\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1058\/2016\/01\/IMG_19700108_212105-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_19700108_212105\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also commemorating the holidays, Caleb used the laser engraver to create Christmas ornaments that were given to students.\u00a0 Using blank ornaments generously provided by P.
